Trick or Treat with Planet Beach

Holidays

Posted October 30, 2022

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday of the year! Some of my fondest childhood memories were of this coveted holiday and the excitement for the spookiest night of the year has followed me into adulthood. It’s the one night of the year where we can embrace our inner child, let go of our inhibitions and hit the streets wearing our favorite costumes. Visiting haunted houses, carving pumpkins and trick or treating are some of the modern-day practices of Halloween, however this holiday is believed to be influenced by Celtic Harvest Festivals over 2,000 years ago. The Celts believed that the dead returned to earth that night, and so they lit bonfires and donned costumes to ward off the ghosts.

When conducting research on the origin of Halloween, I came across the following fun facts and had to share:

Why are Halloween colors Orange & Black?
Orange signals the harvest of autumn, while black is a symbol of darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween was once a festival that celebrated the return of the dead.

The origin of Trick-or-Treating
Trick-or-treating was inspired by the medieval English tradition of “souling,” which involved children going door-to-door on All Souls Day, offering prayers for residents’ deceased loved ones in exchange for food.

What is the top selling Halloween Candy?
The National Retail Federation has estimated that shoppers will spend $3.1 billion on Halloween candy. In 2021, the top selling candy nationwide was Reese’s Cups, followed by Skittles and M&M’s.

The most lit Jack-O’-Lanterns on display
The City of Keene, New Hampshire holds the Guinness World Record for the most lit jack-o’-lanterns on display, which total 30,581. Keene was the original record holder in this category and has broken the record eight times since then.

Those are just a few of the historic findings that help make Halloween the most mysterious and enchanting night of the year.
