Memorial Day is a day that Americans give tribute and memorialize the men and women who died while serving and protected the United States of America. This day originated to honor fallen Union soldiers following the American Civil War. After World War 1, it was extended to include all who died in any war or military action. It wasn’t until after World War II that Memorial Day became an official federal holiday, celebrated on the last Monday in May. Although Memorial Day signifies the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, and many celebrate the three-day weekend by gathering with family and friends, we must not lose sight of the true essence of this special day. The soldiers that gave their lives to protect our freedom may be gone, but they will never be forgotten. This Memorial Day, stop and pay tribute by flying your flags at half-staff, or just stop and thank a member of the military for their dedicated service.
