Understanding Red Light Therapy’s Role at Planet Beach

NASA first developed Red Light technology to grow plants in space, then later to treat wounds in space. Today Red Light Therapy is being used throughout the medical field to heal patients, and used in Planet Beach automated spa’s around the world to rejuvenate the skin. NASA continues to do research on using Red Light Therapy to help cancer patients and have stated that the technology does not cause any harm or side effects. Red Light Therapy is safe and pain free; in fact, Planet Beach members come away seeing results and feeling good after just one session.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy is a technology that has both cosmetic and healing effects. The word “healing” is defined as “the natural process by which the body repairs itself.” That is exactly what happens when the body is exposed to Red Light wavelengths.

Red Light in wavelengths between 630-660 nm (nanometers) has the ability to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin, energizing fibroblast cells that make collagen and elastin production. This is how the skin repairs damage and rejuvenates the skin’s overall appearance. The visible benefits from Red Light Therapy such as reduced wrinkles and firmer skin may seem like just a cosmetic enhancement, but it actually is the result of the body healing itself. Red Light Therapy targets and treats the entire face and body because the treatment is done in a full-sized bed similar to a tanning bed. While the Red Light bed may look like a tanning bed, Red Light Therapy is not dangerous because it produces a wavelength way outside of the UV range. Red Light is often referred to as near infrared light, why? Because as demonstrated in the visible light chart, light from 600nm -750nm is near or close to infrared light. Infrared light is outside of the visual light spectrum meaning we cannot see this wavelength of light with the human eye.

What causes skin to age?

Fibroblast cells are found in the dermis layer of the skin and are responsible for fabricating collagen. During sun exposure, stress, and through the normal aging processes, fibroblasts cells slow their collagen production. As aging continues, the quality of collagen is lessened, wrinkling becomes deeper and skin looses its firmness.

What can I expect from Red Light Therapy treatments?

Treatments using red light will improve the appearance of skin tone and texture, control pigmentation spots, helps reduce the appearance of pore size, encourage vibrant, healthier-looking skin, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Anti-aging Red Light Therapy stimulates circulation and repairs the elastin fibers within tissue to help keep skin firmer and tighter. Over time improved oxygenation and detoxification is achieved as the vascular walls of the skins small blood cells are strengthened, followed by improved natural repair and creation of healthy skin. Skin cells grow by 150% to 200% when exposed to Red Light Therapy. Skin texture and moisture level is also improved with this skin healing process.

Do I need to do anything before my sessions?

Simply shower so your skin is clean. You should also remove any makeup. We strongly recommend you pair with pbRenew®, our Planet Beach Red Light Therapy products, as they will accelerate and enhance your results.

How soon do results become noticeable?

Everyone’s results may vary, depending on their age and the condition of their skin. There are a few immediate changes to skin, such as helping the skin appear cleaner, brighter and tighter. Longer-term therapy results in improved appearance of skin tone and texture.

How often should I go?

This should be a commitment. Results will not be achieved in just a few sessions, or going “occasionally”. We strongly recommend 3 to 4 sessions per week for the first 12 weeks. Continuous use accelerates cellular activity and fuels the collagen and elastin process. After your first 12 weeks, we recommend 1-2 sessions per week thereafter.

Does Red Light Therapy treat acne, age spots, and sun damage?

Red Light helps remove the bacteria that causes acne and generates cellular activity that deals with age spots and sun damage. Anti-aging Red Light Therapy brightens skin and reduces the formation of pigmentation marks. Some people have had dramatic reductions in acne and acne scaring. Age spots require longer-term exposure and therapy.

Are Red Light treatments safe?

Red Light Therapy is completely safe. Red Light penetrates the tissue, delivering energy to stimulate a response from the body to heal itself.

How does Red Light Therapy differ from laser treatments?

Lasers use heat and concentrated light to vaporize or remove tissue. Red Light Therapy bed lamps produce no vaporization or burning of tissue, and therefore no inflammation or erythema. Red Light Therapy is one of the few non-invasive tools available that can reverse the appearance of aging skin, such as fine wrinkles and mottled skin tone.

How long do the results last?

Results depend on the length of treatment and the original conditions being treated. Skin rejuvenation is a dynamic process. If maintenance treatments are discontinued, natural expression lines will gradually return over the course of time, at which point re-treatment can be put in place.
