Mind of Matter Amid COVID-19

Wellness Tips

Posted April 6, 2020

People worldwide are adjusting to life amid COVID-19, which has altered the way we live, work and learn.  During these trying times of self-quarantine and broken routines, it’s vital to incorporate self-caring practices that will help to keep the body strong and the mind right.

Make a diligent effort to incorporate these three practices into your daily routine and remember that it’s the simple philosophy of mind over matter.

Exercise
A consistent exercise regime has been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. It delivers oxygen to muscles and helps the cardiovascular system work more efficiently. In addition to these amazing health benefits, exercise can help tone the body and maintain weight loss.  Incorporate 30 minutes of physical activity daily to achieve results.

Soak Up the Rays
As we transition into the season of spring, remember to spend some extra time outdoors soaking up the sun.  According to WebMD, moderate exposure to the sun’s UV rays will assist the body with the production of Vitamin D, which is important for your bones, blood cells, and immune system. It also helps you take in and use certain minerals, like calcium and phosphorus. In addition, sunlight helps boost a chemical in your brain called serotonin, and that can give you more energy and help keep you calm, positive, and focused.

Be Grateful
Expressing gratitude through journaling is a highly effective way to foster happiness.  Researchers have found that people who write down things that they are grateful for have increased satisfaction in life, higher energy levels and improved health. In one study, people who read a letter of appreciation to someone in their lives were measurably happier almost one month later.
