This month’s new food to incorporate is pearl…
Pearl powder is made from freshwater pearls or saltwater pearls below jewelry grade. These are sterilized in boiling water and then milled into a fine powder using stainless steel grinding discs or by milling with small porcelain balls in moist conditions. The powder is sold as such or mixed into creams.
Pearl powder contains a number of amino acids, over 30 trace minerals, and a high concentration of calcium. In Chinese medicine, it is used as an anti-inflammatory and detoxification agent, and as a relaxant.
The calcium content is considered beneficial for people who may be calcium deficient with issues such as osteoporosis. A typical dose is 1 gram of pearl powder taken by mouth, traditionally mixed into water or tea, twice weekly. Excessive doses may cause calcium toxicity.
The powder is also used to treat stomach and intestinal conditions such as indigestion and chronic constipation. It is claimed to minimize pain from sores and ulcers, and to help reduce the sores and ulcers themselves.
Pearl powder has been used both internally and externally in China for thousands of years. The only female empress of China, famed for her impeccable complexion, used pearl powder as a skin care preparation and cosmetic. Today, many skin care creams and masks in Asia feature pearl powder.
3 Ways That You Can Use Pearl Powder for Skin Health
1. Make a pearl powder mask
It leaves your face silky, matte, soft and soothed.
Directions: Empty one capsule of pearl powder into a bowl and add water of rose water, a few drops at a time, until you have a thick liquid that you can apply to your face with fingers. Let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing.
2. Use pearl powder as a finishing powder
Do you use a pressed powder to mattify your skin or set your makeup? Ditch the compact and switch to pearl powder! It sounds crazy, but pearl powder could be considered “mineral makeup” because pearls are minerals. Pearl powder makes an ideal face powder that diffuses imperfections and adds a shine-free luminosity.
Directions: To use pearl powder as a face powder, empty a capsule of the pearl powder onto a saucer, dip in a makeup brush, and very lightly brush it over your face. As an added bonus, you’ll reap the skin care benefits of pearl powder by using it this way. You can even apply it before bed, and it helps soothe skin and absorb excess oil during the night.
3. Supplement with pearl powder
100% pure, high quality pearl powder may be taken internally to support skin health. The unique benefits of supplementing with pearl powder are wonderful! According to acupuncturist Patricia Pilot, these are the benefits of pearl powder supplementation:
- Pearl powder contains an antioxidant that boosts the efficacy of superoxide dismutase, one of the strongest antioxidant enzymes in the body, help fade colored blemishes, reduce wrinkling and scarring, and even eliminate the occasional pimple.
- Pearl powder contains signal proteins that stimulate the regeneration of collagen
- Pearl powder contains a concentrated source of the most bio-available form of calcium
- Pearl powder is rich in amino acids and more than 30 trace minerals to support health
Pearl powder will not only put you en route to flawless skin on the outside, but it will also build precious mineral reserves on the inside. Rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, silica and amino acids, pearl powder can help maintain strong bones and teeth. What’s more? Pearl powder can zen you out. Known as a powerful Shen (spirit) stabilizer, it supports mood stability with its soothing and calming nature. Its spirit-building capabilities can help to relieve the uneasiness, nervousness, anxiety and tension associated with occasional stress, leaving you cool, calm and collected.
