The Hangover
GeneralHangovers are no fun. We over indulge during the night and pay for it in the morning.
What happened to the days when I could go out at 10 pm, stay out until 2 am, go to an after party and still get up to go to classes in the morning, no problem?!
Now, I have one bottle of wine and I’m useless to the world the next day. Now that I work in a corporate office, I had to learn how to cope. There are so many hangover remedies online, but this is what works for me:
Step one: Avoid the hangover as much as possible
Drink plenty of water- For every drink you have follow it with a glass of water, as it will deflect the miserable morning headache.
Stay classy San Diego- Be sure to stay away from well drinks, because cheaper liquors cause headaches more than top-shelf. So, make it rain and avoid the pain.
Avoid dark drinks- This is hard to do when you love red wine, but darker drinks contribute to hangovers more than light drinks.
Keep it flat- Carbonated mix drinks and bubbly can cause alcohol to be absorbed faster. Fun, but risky!
Be sure to eat a protein rich meal before hitting the bottle- That Appletini does not count as dinner.
Step two: Reduce the damage that has already been done
Drink water again- Fight dehydration and replenish your body.
Eat again- Grab a potassium rich breakfast like a banana or a spinach omelet. When we are dehydrated we also loose electrolytes, so be sure to replenish those, as well. Scrambled eggs are great too. They contain taurine, which has been shown to reduce the damage to the liver after a night of drinking.
Take a multi-vitamin- Drinking takes a toll on your body and depletes nutrients, so be sure to replenish what you lost from the night before. I love the Enrich from Planet Beach! It gives me a boost of energy that is much needed to get me off the couch.
Make a pot of Ginger tea- Hangovers go hand and hand with an upset stomach. Ginger settles this, and it has been shown to help combat nausea.
OJ- Alcohol will drop blood sugar, so bump it back up with a glass of sunshine.
Let’s get physical- Yes, I know *GROANS*… but get some fresh air, as oxygen will speed up the process of breaking down the toxins. Exercise will also release endorphins to help get rid of that resting bitch face you’ve got going on. Also, meditation and breathing exercises like yoga can also help with the oxygen flow relieve stress and get that blood pumping.
Last, but not least, another way I reduce stress and help reduce the pounding in my head without having to move a muscle is a headache relief eye pillow. I love the one from Planet Beach, because it has eucalyptus and peppermint to soothe and relieve my headache and helps me to relax while it blocks out all the light that is my sworn enemy on these days.
Do you have any crazy home remedies for a hangover, I would love to try them!
