The Thanksgiving Holiday is upon us and loved ones will gather to give thanks for their blessings as they fill their plates with the abundance of food spread before them.  It’s a day filled with family, football and those old family traditions.  I’ll always have fond memories of waking up to the aroma of my Momma’s mouth-watering turkey, wrapping myself in a blanket and tuning in to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade before the day’s festivities would commence. The day would continue with a gathering of family, an abundance of blessings and the consumption of the most delicious food imaginable. Soon after, everyone would curl up on the sofa and try to peel their eyes open as the Turkey’s Tryptophan settled in.

Although each family has their own unique way of celebrating this annual holiday, I researched some commonalities among most Americans:

• Over 50.9 million Americans will travel this Thanksgiving Holiday
• An estimated 43 million will tune in to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
• Americans will consume an average of 4,500 calories each, which will take an average of 10 hours and 41 minutes to burn through exercise
• $640 million is the estimated amount spent on turkeys
• American’s Favorite Thanksgiving Dishes:
  • 39% Turkey
  • 23% Stuffing
  • 12% Pumpkin Pie
  • 9% Mashed Potatoes
  • 6% Sweet Potatoes
  • 3% Cranberry Sauce

Although Thanksgiving is a day to reconnect with loved ones and indulge in the grand feast, the true spirit of Thanksgiving is about expressing gratitude for your blessings and giving to those who are less fortunate. This holiday season, give thanks by involving the entire family in volunteering, donating, and spreading kindness. Mother Teresa said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” This year, show your family how much you love them and give thanks for your blessings individually and openly.
