3 Ways to Make a Positive First Impression
BusinessIn business, you never get a second chance to make a great first impression. This statement reigns so true. My Dad gave me two words of advice when I started my career. First and foremost, he told me not to make a lot of mistakes. Secondly, he said people are always judging you. As I progressed in my career through the years, I’ve understood all too well the truth behind those words. Most people will cast judgement within the first few minutes of meeting you and their impression of you may never vary. The impression you create plays a vital role in developing future relationships. These are three solid ways that you can enhance your probability of making a positive and lasting first impression.
1. Physical Appearance
A groomed and well-dressed physical appearance is critical to making a positive first impression. Remember that what you wear makes a statement about who you are. Take the extra time needed to focus on the details. If you are pressed for time in the morning, set your alarm clock 20 minutes early so that you can put the finishing touches on your final appearance. Adding accessories to your outfit and putting on a little perfume or cologne goes a long way.
2. Body Language
Never underestimate the power of body language! The effective use of body language plays a key role in communication. Making eye contact and acknowledging the person in front of you is critical to making a positive first impression. However, the most important aspect of body language runs so much deeper than just physical gestures. To exude positive body language, you must have a positive state of mind. Your thoughts control your attitude and your attitude controls your actions. If you want to have a positive and approachable demeanor, then think positively! Can you feel someone’s vibe? I know I can.
3. Remember Their Name
The most impressive thing you can do when meeting someone is to remember their name. When you remember someone’s name it makes them feel special. Try repeating a name silently or aloud to record it to memory when meeting someone for the first time.
