Find Your Motivation
Wellness TipsMotivation is defined as “the reason one has for behaving in a particular way.” We can think of motivation as the process that initiates and activates goal-oriented behaviors. Motivation can stem from many different factors. One of the most important steps in becoming motivated is to set a goal.
When we set a goal, we reorient our minds in preparation to pursue that goal. The more specific we are about our goals the better. When we set vague goals, such as “I want to be healthier,” we are unwittingly setting ourselves up for failure. Our minds react to specific, actionable goals. Try to set goals like: “I want to walk at the park each morning for 30 minutes” or “I want to eat at least 2 servings of vegetables per day.”
I want to encourage you to set aside some time today, whether its 1 minute or 1 hour, to consider your goals in as many areas of your life. Taking the time to define your goals and analyzing how attainable they are will aid you in your path to goal accomplishment.
Once the goal is established and analyzed, then it’s time to take massive action! This is the most difficult part for many people, and, unfortunately, there is no shortcut. Nike said it best when they came up with the slogan “Just do it!” However, making your goals specific can help. The goal to get healthy and the goal of eating 2 servings of vegetables each day are similar, but the important difference between them is that the second goal is more actionable.
Another crucial component of motivation is getting involved within a community. When we get involved within a community, we open ourselves up to receive support as well as to give support to others. There is a great sense of fulfillment achieved by lending a helping hand or just being there for someone in need.
