I have been a member of the PDX Planet Beach spa since August 2012. Since then I have had nothing but positive results. I continue to see results and get constant questioning from those I know about what I am doing to lose weight and tone up. Every time I have to tell them about Planet Beach. I wish these spas were everywhere so my loved ones in other areas could get in on this secret to weight loss and feeling good.
My favorite service would have to be the Hydration detox machine. This machine, (basically a vibrating steam machine) not only literally melts inches off of my body, but also breaks up cellulite. I love the way I feel after my relaxing time in the hydration machine. This is especially helpful when one is feeling sluggish after too much drinking, or making unwise eating choices. I’m not going to lie..I usually do enjoy a glass (or two) of the complementary wine while I am at Planet Beach too. A girls gotta live a happy life!
While Hydration is my favorite service, I cannot forget about the other great services I often find myself using, such as the red light (helps with acne, migraines, stretch marks, cellulite and several other things), the amazing massage chair that I often sit in while I get my teeth whitened (no longer need a personal masseuse..just one of these chairs), Mystic Tanning, and the Slim Capsule (Like a sauna detox machine).
While I love my time at the spa..my schedule does not always allow me to be there as often as I would like. Therefore, I feel blessed that the at home Slim Wrap exists. This at home wrap has worked wonders for me. I instantly saw results including my clothes fitting much different than before the wrap. I highly recommend this to people who either want more benefit to add on top of the spa (like me!) or cannot join a spa for one reason or another. I have a friend who now uses this since there is no spa where she lives.
I also have done the Planet Beach recommended two week detox plan. I saw marvelous results with this! I lost 12lbs in two weeks and have managed to keep 8 of the 12 off over a month later. I had honestly never done a fully blown detox cleanse before and was a bit nervous to do one. I like to eat..in fact I love to eat…so I was worried I would not be able to sustain the strict diet. To my amazement I did pretty darn well. I fulfilled my sugar cravings with fruit and let myself cheat here or there when I really wanted something I was not supposed to have. Even with not being 100 percent faithful to the diet restrictions I still lost 12 lbs. I am still amazed.
I highly recommend this spa to anyone who wants to start looking and feeling healthier and see real results. I could not believe how fast I had my clothes fitting differently and the overwhelming amount of comments I got on what I was doing. Planet Beach is no joke.

Planet Beach Spa Owner Breaks Down
the Stereotypes of Ownership

Andrea McNeil was nervous, excited and anticipated opening the doors for the first day of business. She ran campaigns for political candidates in New Orleans and led multi-million dollars fundraising drives for non-profits. But, this was different, she was about to open the doors of her Planet Beach in Terrytown.

She recalled the hard work, but didn’t celebrate too much after her first customer. “I knew it was just the beginning,” she said. “I’ll feel accomplished after the one year anniversary.” Even on her opening day, she was thinking about the 80 percent of new businesses that fail within the first year. Now, she’s moving toward year two.

In year two, she aspires to expand Planet Beach’s Business Partners in a mutually beneficial program that shares discounts and increases clients for both companies. McNeil will also heighten awareness of the corporate wellness program, which helps reduce health care cost for companies that are associated employee’s obesity and smoking, while also increasing their productivity, by being happier and healthier.
McNeil’s path to opening Planet Beach wasn’t a straight one, but the right one. She relocated to New Orleans and started direct sales and marketing company, a year after graduating from Northeastern Illinois University in 2002, with a degree in chemistry and math. In August 2005, like most New Orleanians, Hurricane Katrina forced her from the city. McNeil returned to the city and transitioned to working on political campaigns and later did fundraising for nonprofits.

“Non-profits were doing a lot more change and growth than politics,” she said. In 2010, she earned her master’s in public administration from the University of New Orleans. Seeking a business she was passionate about led her to Planet Beach. The company’s model is a contempo spa, which is an automatic day spa. “It’s really a passion of mine, helping people look and feel good,” McNeil said “That’s what health and wellness is about.”

She referred to the state’s obesity ranking, which is always among the worst in America and her business addresses that problem. In McNeil’s posh Planet Beach with hardwood floors and brightly painted orange walls and yellow trim. Planet Beach is more than tanning, it’s also weight management. One program is the Saunatox, where users can burn 300 to 600 calories during a 20 to 30 minute sessions while relaxing. They also offer massages, tanning, facials, and skin care and teeth whitening, McNeil’s spa offers 13 different services. McNeil combats offering a non-essential service during an economic down turn by offering a superior product.

“We’re in a wellness revolution,” she said, “people want to be healthier an anti-aging is important.”

McNeil describes the business as a service for everybody and membership for anybody and on cue a tall athletic man completed his session then walked towards the door. The attendant addressed the client by name as he set up his next appointment and said his goodbyes.

“We see our members between one to five times a week and get to know them,” she said.

McNeil hails from an entrepreneurial family; her father owned one of the first Subway restaurants in Chicago. But, she has never formally studied business.”It’s a spirit, it’s a mindset it’s characteristics,” she said about thriving in business and added that people’s environment are paramount. She attributes her solid upbringing to her family and her faith in God. “The turning point in my business,” she said, “is when I decided to make God my business partner.”

I’m not normally the kind of dude that goes to a day spa.

I don’t have anything against them, because, well, I never knew enough to be “against” anything.

But on a recent Saturday morning I stopped in atPlanet Beach Contempo Spa, 8201 S. Howell Ave., and chatted with new owners Wyatt Foderaro and Phillip Bondi.

At the end of our conversation, I decided to try some of the services for myself. I was at the tail end of a particularly stressful week. Why not?

Thus began my maiden voyage into the land of the spa.

It started with answering a few questions about myself so that Planet Beach can “build a profile” of me, as they do any client. Not surprisingly, “relaxation” was what I would be focusing on, and the services they recommended for me matched that profile.

First up was the hydration station.

Oh, sweet lord. This is as good as it gets.

I lay down on this machine that essentially gave me a full-body massage while everything except my head was in a 120-degree sauna.

The following went through my head as I entered this state of extreme relaxation:

• This would be the ideal way to listen to Bon Iver music.

• I wonder how much it would cost to buy one for my house.

• I really have an irrational fear that someone is about to walk in.

Well, no one did disturb me, and the greatest part was that it wasn’t one of those things that flew by. Somehow, they nailed it – it didn’t go too long and it didn’t go too short, and it accomplished everything it was suppose to accomplish.

After one of the more glorious 20 minutes of my month, I headed over to get some red light therapy. This involves some funny looking glasses and laying down on a machine again minus the vibrations.

I would compare this to a tanning bed, only without the tanning part. I guess it’s supposed to help the way your skin looks. Whatever. It was a good cool-down after the excitement of the hydration station.

I then received what’s termed a “lumiere facial,” in which the funny-looking glasses shielded me from some extremely bright light. The light was crazy bright, but you get used to it after a few minutes and it becomes so relaxing that it would be easy to fall asleep.

In the last service, I dipped my hands into some warm water and got a umo hand massage.

Mind you, lumiere facial, massages, hydration station – I could not have told you what any of these terms meant before I went. They might has well have been in Yiddish.

But let me tell you something, day spas are awesome. I realize to some people, this is like saying, “Hey, have you noticed how pretty it is to look out onto Lake Michigan?”

But it’s still worth throwing out there: even dudes who weren’t previously into day spas can become big fans. Especially after you reach maximum levels of relaxation.

Nevada franchise owner likes affordable day spa concept

Ever since the ink dried on Steve Keifer’s deal with Planet Beach Contempo Spa in October 2007, he fully committed himself to the growth of his business based on his belief in the franchisor’s business model. He worked closely with Planet Beach to secure the best location for his targeted demographics, and today he has two locations, in Las Vegas and Green Valley, Nevada ? which is the location where he first became a member.

“The first Planet Beach I ever walked into, I now own,” he says. “I bought it this past January and it came full circle.” Here he talks about why now is the right time to get into the Planet Beach Contempo Spa business.

Planet Beach: What was your background?
Steve Keifer: My background was and is construction.

PB: How did you get involved with Planet Beach?
SK: I was an outside rep for a company near San Diego. One of the guys I was working with, a contractor in Santa Cruz, was staining floors and counters for tanning salons. I helped him devise that application.

Over the next two years a guy in that area opened three tanning salons. I had some money I wanted to put to work so I started looking into tanning salons. In researching tanning salons I ran across Planet Beach. I liked the concept and though it was much more stable and long term than just offering tanning. And so the process began and my due diligence included research and calling other franchisees to see what they thought. And now, here I am with two of them.

PB: What have you liked best about Planet Beach?
SK: The results that we see. People spray tan and that is all fine and good, but the results from the Hydration Station, from the Slim Capsule, from the sauna and all the services are amazing if you get on a regimen and stick to it.

We have people who come to us from other tanning salons, who have worked at a Palm Beach Tan or Body Heat or some of the bigger names here, and they are just blown away by how much knowledge we have of our products and services. That’s thanks to the training Planet Beach provides. We have people who swear by what we have. They can’t go a day without Planet Beach so it is exciting to see that.

PB: What is the best way for you to get people in the door?
SK: We have what is called the “Business of the Week.” Every week we promote one or two of our members’ businesses, where everyone in their office can come in and try the services for free anytime that week. It exposes people to us, and we are using our member’s network, really using them to work for us and inviting other people to the spa.

In the summer, in this type of business, that strategy has kept us on an even keel during a season when a lot of other spas basically lose membership. We have kept it pretty steady. The biggest thing for us is networking our members, and then if people sign up we tack on a free month at the end of their membership. We also do member appreciation parties and raffle off gift baskets with products in them.

With our Ambassador program, if five people you refer sign up, you get a free year, and if 10 people sign up you get a free lifetime membership, so we track that as well. We also do spa parties. We will shut down earlier on a Sunday, for example, for spa party participants to come in and experience us.

PB: Why would you recommend Planet Beach Contempo Spa to a potential franchisee?
SK: It is almost a recession-proof business because everybody likes to be pampered, and all of the other things that go along with that – the weight loss, the facials, the skin care we have. And it is affordable. If I go to a spa and get a hot stone massage for 90 minutes, it is $200 not including a tip – there is not value there. It is a special treat. It is also a niche business. Other companies do some of the things that we do, but we have many, many services plus products for your face and skin. Once you start using them and see the wonderful effects, you will realize they work tremendously.

Competitors would take at least five years to get where we are now, and we would be that much further along. Planet Beach keeps evolving. It is a good, recession-proof business that even in these times is still improving.

PB: How do you spend your free time?
SK: I have an 8-year-old son and I coach his soccer team. I also like to fish and hunt and do a little bit of travel.
