Celebrate Carnival Season with Planet Beach & Laissez les bons temps rouler – “Let the good times roll!”

This morning, I visited my favorite neighborhood coffee shop to pick up my daily dose of caffeine and, lo and behold, there was a King Cake available for purchase among the row of pastries, bagels and muffins. Then suddenly, the Hawketts Mardi Gras Mambo began playing in the background and just like that, it was Carnival Time!

January 6th commemorates Three Kings Day, a holiday celebrated in most Latin American and Caribbean countries. The holiday is associated with the traditional Christian feast day of Epiphany when the three wise men brought gifts to baby Jesus. Many countries pay homage to the wise men by placing hay, grass or shoes under their beds in exchange for a special gift. In addition, there is a culinary tradition of making Rosca de Reyes (King’s Cake), which is an oval shaped pastry with a little doll inside representing baby Jesus.

Although there are a multitude of similarities between the two delicacies, the New Orleans King Cake tradition was thought to originate in France in 1870. The King Cake is an oval shaped mix of French pastry and coffee cake and is decorated in the royal colors of PURPLE which signifies “Justice,” GREEN for “Faith,” and GOLD for “Power.” Ironically, January 6th also signifies the official start of Carnival Season which is filled with colorful parades, masquerade balls and an unlimited supply of King Cake! Before you indulge in this little taste of heaven, you must know that if you are lucky enough to get the baby, then you must host the next party and supply the King Cake. The festivities continue for approximately two months and conclude on Mardi Gras Day or “Fat Tuesday” which is always held the day before Ash Wednesday.

This New Orleans tradition brings people together near and far for an amazing celebration and provides a sense of community filled with party goers living their best life. The parades start rolling on January 6th as the Krewe of Joan of Arc navigates the French Quarter and will continue through March 1st with the Krewe of Zulu taking to the streets with their elaborate costumes and their coveted coconuts. How grand life would be if we were all masters of time management. The guiding principle of managing your time effectively is to acquire the innate ability to focus. Although we all possess the ability, it is a skill that must be learned and cultivated.

A recent study found that the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds today. It is reported that goldfish have a 9-second attention span. So how did that come to be? How does a goldfish exceed a human’s attention span? With our brains constantly stimulated by emails, phone calls, text messages, social media & live interaction, it’s easy for the mind to automatically drift to the next shiny thing.

I remember when I was young, I would plant myself in front of the TV in the living room to complete my homework. Ironically, I was the most productive and comfortable when I immersed myself in the most active room in the house with constant noise in the background. I trained myself to let the world around me disappear so that I could completely focus on the task at hand. Although I can be easily distracted, I think that habit forming exercise of finding the quiet amidst the chaos has helped me with my life-long ability to focus.

Extending your attention span is just as important as what you focus on! Time is a commodity and it’s valuable. As a leader, you must focus on the things that matter the most. “Where focus goes, energy flows,” Tony Robbins says. “What you focus on, you feel.” The power of focus affects all aspects of your life. You can focus on goals at work, in your relationships or on personal goals like fitness and emotional health – and you can manifest those goals into being.”

Focus is the center of your interest and activity and you must condition yourself to not only pay attention, but to pay attention to what matters most. So often we are told, even as kids, that if we aren’t naturally talented, we shouldn’t bother trying to get better. “You either have it or you don’t” are the deadly words that describe a fixed mindset.

The fixed mindset pigeonholes a person by what he or she is good at, and only by that. It avoids challenges, gives up easily, sees effort as worthless, ignores constructive criticism, and breeds the insecurity that leads to feeling threatened by others’ success. The fixed mindset is pressured by expectations that performance must match talent. The worst part about it may be that so often, we do it to ourselves. That’s why I’m so drawn to the opposite way of thinking & having a growth mindset.

The growth mindset is based on a desire to learn. It embraces challenges, persists despite obstacles, and welcomes the chance to learn from criticism. A person with this mindset views others’ success as a window into lessons and inspiration for even greater personal success, fueled by the power of free will (not expectation).

Most people are held back not by their innate ability, but by their mindset. They think intelligence is fixed, but it isn’t. Your brain is like a muscle. The more you use it and struggle, the more it grows. New research shows we can take control of our ability to learn. We can all become better learners. We just need to build our brains in the right way.

Let’s talk about three concrete ways to build this mindset and why these will benefit you.

1. Positive self-talk.
A mindset is like software: it runs on a script. So, if you want to change your performance, you must change the script running inside your head. There must be new words to replace, “You either have it or you don’t.”

The new script for a growth mindset says, “You have the ability to make yourself into anything you want. Your inborn talent is important, but how much you work is even more important.” This new script does not impose a cap on your performance. Instead, you’re issuing yourself a challenge to do the work only you can do.

2. Positive habits.
A recent New Yorker article, “Better All the Time,” pointed out that the growth mindset and the performance industry has created “the mainstreaming of excellent habits.” If greater success and performance is possible with hard work, then the more consistent and targeted the work, the more growth can be expected.

3. Positive feedback.
We live with big data all around us, delivered via technology that measures how you are doing compared to yesterday, last week, last year, your competition, but most of all yourself. There is no substitute for hard numbers to rank performance, and it widens the gulf between a growth mindset and the abstract “you either have it or you don’t” thinking.

The word vibe attested in 1967 as an abbreviated form of vibration in the 1960’ slang sense of “instinctive feeling.” You can instantly feel a vibe from the moment you walk into an establishment or meet a person for the first time.
