You’ve worked hard to achieve success. You’ve struggled through demanding times, you’ve met challenges head on, and you’ve fought the hard battles. But you’re about to face your toughest challenge yet –– complacency. Achieving success is hard but staying successful is even harder.
Running a business is difficult because almost every industry is competitive. That’s just the nature of business. And it’s exactly why feeling complacent during a time of consistency is so dangerous. If your company has found a way to meet its goals and find growth in a competitive market, then you can bet that your competitors have taken notice. They’re actively trying to figure out what you’re doing so they can try to do it better. Don’t fall asleep at the wheel! You’re at the top of your game. It appears nothing is going to stop you –– except you. Here are 8 tips to fighting complacency:
Don’t let your guard down. Give yourself a kick in the butt. If you’re not up to the job, find someone who is.
Stay grounded. Remember what made you successful and what you’ve learned along the way.
Create stretch goals. Push your limits. Set ambitious yet realistic goals. Challenge everyone to do better and to be better. The fact is, if you spend your life coasting, it’ll all be downhill.
Don’t be a know-it-all. Know what you know and what you don’t know. It’s strength, not weakness, to seek advice from others.
Compete with yourself. View success as a journey rather than as a destination. Focus on beating your best rather than your competition. That way you’ll always be growing and learning from the best in the field — yourself.
Look for areas of vulnerability. Ask “what-if” questions to uncover blind spots. Be your own customer. Find the cracks in your system.
Maintain momentum. Don’t let up. As soon as you achieve one goal, set another. It’s easier to maintain momentum than to rebuild it once it’s lost.
Look to the future (not the past). Take the time to smell the roses, but don’t spend too much time basking in the glory of success. As Andrew Grove, former CEO of Intel, said, “Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive.”
Wherever you find success you’ll find complacency. But you have the ability to control your situation –– if you have the will and desire. It takes so much to become successful, why bring yourself down? Don’t look over your shoulder to see who’s coming; the real opposition lies with yourself. Complacency is the enemy of success.

Focus is defined as the center of activity, attraction or attention. The importance of maintaining your focus in business is key to producing quality work in a timely fashion. How often do you start working on a project, presentation or task and lose your focus? The act of writing this blog takes my complete attention and focus. When I’m locked in, I can complete a quality blog in a short amount of time. On the contrary, if I’m easily distracted, it becomes time consuming and cumbersome.
Follow these 3 tips to maintain your Focus:
1. Define Your Priorities
To make something focus worthy, you need to make it a priority. Make a list of the things that are most pressing. Whether it’s a project with a looming deadline or a dinner party that you need to host, make it a priority and give it your utmost attention. Divide your list among professional and personal and don’t allow the two to overlap. Prioritize your to-dos and give your attention to the one at the top of the list.
2. Quiet Your Mind
To sustain your focus, you must detach from your thoughts and quiet your mind. Victor Davich, author 8-Minute Meditation: Quiet Your Mind, Change Your Life, teaches an 8-minute meditation technique that includes three simple steps of positioning, breathing and detaching from your thoughts. Being mindful means being present, explains Davich. “Once you are present and centered and here, your mind will naturally quiet down.” There have been times where I’ve found a quiet place so that I could focus on the task at hand without interruption.
3. Create a Functional Workspace
I’m not a huge fan of file cabinets because whatever is out of sight, is often out of mind. However, if you have something that deserves your uninterrupted attention, you need to clear the clutter and ensure your workspace is free of distraction. Take 15 minutes daily to either file or discard of papers. When you go to complete a project, the last thing you need is a bill catching your eye at the corner of your desk and throwing you off track. Additionally, make sure that your workspace has adequate lighting and that the temperature is set just right. These factors play a huge role in creating a comfortable environment, which allows you to stay present while focusing on the task at hand.
Bruce Lee, the revered martial artist, actor and filmmaker, understood the importance of focus. “His ability to focus was the result of experience and discipline. Bruce realized early on that what separated the good from the exceptional, was the concentrated mind. To develop his mind into a weapon he took the lessons that life gave him and molded them to his advantage.” Bruce once said, “The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.”
We may not all be a Bruce Lee, but we can adopt his practice of finding focus by defining our priorities, quieting our minds and creating a functional environment. Remember, at the end of the day, you get what you focus on. Regardless of your end game, define your focus and pursue it relentlessly.

It’s that time of year again! It’s time for the holidays, and most of us can’t help but fall off the healthy eating wagon. The Thanksgiving turkey with all the fixings, holiday cookies and treats, and flowing cocktails can make it tough to stop consuming those unnecessary calories! Not to mention the holidays include spending time with your friends and family, and that often results in chatting and more eating! Overeating is not something you usually plan on doing, but don’t beat yourself up if you do. Instead, brush yourself off and get back on track using these seven tips:
1. Start fresh.
A new day means a new beginning. Start your post-holiday day off right by eating a balanced breakfast. Continue your day with healthy snacks and meals; most people need three meals and two snacks. Once you can get through that first day of healthy eating, each subsequent day becomes easier.
2. Track your progress.
Tracking your food and activity is a fantastic way to make yourself aware of and responsible for your habits. If you find you’re eating too many calories, figure out where they’re coming from and shave off those extra calories moving forward. If you find yourself shy a few thousand steps on your tracker, do a few laps around the neighborhood. If you are in school or work in an office sitting regularly, counting your steps may not get you there. Hit the gym for some cardio or even better, take 15-30 minutes and jump in the HOTWORX to burn calories quick at your nearest Planet Beach or HOTWORX Studio!
3. Plan ahead.
Think about the snacks and meals you want to prepare and make a shopping list. Plan your meals a few days or a week in advance so you can be fully stocked with healthy foods.
4. Cook ahead and freeze.
Part of planning is anticipating days when you’ll be just too busy with work, kids and life to worry about cooking. To prepare for those times, dedicate one day a month to cook a double batch of a healthy meal and freeze it for later. Portion the meals into single serving or family-sized containers that are safe for freezing so that they can be easily defrosted on busy days.
5. Use your slow cooker.
During the cold days of winter, there’s nothing better than getting home after a long day to the smell of something warm in the slow cooker! Make a healthy chili, soup, stew, risotto, brisket or other delicious dishes in a flash by adding the recipe ingredients to the slow cooker, stirring them and setting the machine on “cook.” When you return from work, you’ll have a mouthwatering meal waiting for you. Yes, it’s that easy.
6. Build a healthy salad.
Bulk up on a salad filled with fiber and protein to help keep you satisfied. Vegetables are very low in calories and are also filled with water, so they will hydrate you, which is especially important if you’re going to take my advice on the gym or HOTWORX infrared sauna workout!
7. Don’t fall for superfoods.
All whole foods like fruits and vegetables are “super.” They contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals (natural plant compounds that help prevent and fight disease) to help keep your body nourished. There’s no one food that will help you lose weight or burn fat, and eating too much of some so-called superfoods (like nuts or juices) can actually add unnecessary calories to your eating plan. The trick is eating a variety of foods in order to get a well-balanced diet, which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, nonfat or low-fat dairy, healthy fat and lean protein. Taking in a variety of foods can be tougher than it seems, but that’s why tracking food comes in handy.
What’s important is that you get back on track after the holiday season and continue good habits to stay healthy! Now, go make the most of the time with your friends and family without beating yourself up about the inevitable extra calorie consumption!

There is nothing more effective than maintaining a solid level of consistency to excel in life. Consistency is the habit that leads to success. Whether it’s dedicating your morning listening to the latest news reports, allocating your lunch break to squeeze in a workout, or reducing your to-dos and objectives to writing, the key to these actions is doing them consistently. In a world full of constants, it’s vital to maintain a level of steadiness and consistency in your behavior and schedule the things that are most important to you without fail.
Personally, my evenings during the week are dedicated to my workouts and I make it a point to go straight to the gym after work. Once I get home and hit the sofa, it’s all over. I make a commitment to exercise because it reduces stress, increases my level of energy and keeps me in shape. I commit to it and follow through. On a professional level, I structure my days to ensure that I am as productive as possible by documenting my to-dos and leaving at the end of the work day with a sense of accomplishment. I make it a priority to list my objectives for the following day before I leave the office. This strategy forces me to analyze my existing to-do list, review my accomplishments and re-prioritize for the following day. When I show up for work the next day, my pre-analyzed list is there and waiting. There are many times that we are so caught up in the flow of the day, that we lose sight of the big picture and can’t see the forest through the trees. Emails, phone calls, office visits and unexpected fires in the workplace are inevitable. I make a habit of prioritizing my to-dos because it increases my level of productivity.
Force yourself to incorporate consistent and positive actions or behaviors into your daily routine until they fall into the habit loop and become automated. So how long does it take to form a new habit? According to a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, Health Psychology Researcher, Phillippa Lally determined that it takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days for people to form a new habit.
The study examined the habits of 96 people over a 12-week period. Each person chose one new habit for the 12 weeks and reported each day on whether they did the behavior and how automatic the behavior felt.
Some people chose simple habits like “drinking a bottle of water with lunch.” Others chose more difficult tasks like “running for 15 minutes before dinner.” At the end of the 12 weeks, the researchers analyzed the data to determine how long it took each person to go from starting a new behavior to automatically doing it.
On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. And how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. Again, in Lally’s study, it took anywhere from 18 days to 254 days for people to form a new habit.”
Make a commitment to excellence and make the lifestyle and professional choices needed to create consistent and positive habits in your life. We are all striving to be better versions of ourselves, so make the commitment to do just that and make one positive change today and do it consistently. In at least 66 days from now, you will look back and be happy that you did!

Online reviews are critical to the success of a local business, with nearly 90% of consumers only considering purchasing from a business if they have a star rating of 3 or above. Responding to online reviews is another critical piece in not only building a positive online presence, but also in encouraging other consumers to leave their feedback and engage with your business. How does a business respond to online reviews? Do positive online reviews need to be responded to at all? How do you respond to a negative review? Don’t know where to start? I’m here to help!
Let’s start with the fun ones first, the positive reviews. Responding to positive reviews is just as important as responding to negative reviews. However, many businesses wonder why. If a good customer leaves a glowing five-star review, it can’t get any better than that, right? Actually, it can. Responding to a positive review is an easy way to engage with happy customers that benefits both your brand identity, and your one-to-one relationship with that customer. Remember, online reviews and review sites are public, so the positive conversations that happen about your brand here can do wonders for your business! Actively creating, and engaging with, positive online conversations about your brand and the local community can encourage others to participate in that conversation and generate more buzz and visibility for your business. More importantly, it affects search rankings. By replying properly, you can improve the SEO ranking of the review, and help the review show up in search results for a business. So how can your business hit your review responses out of the park and get in some good marketing?
Step 1: Thank the customer for the positive review and be specific.
It’s the polite thing to do. If a customer gave you a compliment in real life, you would say thank you. It’s only polite. And with an online review, the compliment is public. So be extra nice! Ensure the reviewer knows a real person is behind your reply by thanking them for something specific they said. “Thanks for leaving a review and mentioning our Spa Director, Paige. You’re right, she is enthusiastic!”
Step 2: Use the business name and keywords in your response to the good review.
Using the business name, category and location in your response will help the positive reviews appear in the search results. “The team here at Planet Beach spray & spa in Covington is thrilled to hear such good feedback, and we’re proud to be your community’s one stop shop for relaxation, health, and wellness!”
Step 3: Add a little marketing to your review response.
Your reply is public and will be read by others, including future customers, so throw in some marketing! Mention a behind-the-scenes reason they had a great experience, or a new feature or promotion. “Have you tried the new Planet Beach app? Count calories, make appointments, earn rewards, and more!”
Step 4: Invite customers to do something in your response.
Ask the customer to return, use another service or spread the word. “Next time you’re here, you should try the HOTWORX!” “We hope to see you again soon, and bring a friend!”
With these easy steps you are well on your way to having some great, positive conversations on your online review pages! Now, it’s time to discuss the not so fun part, the negative reviews. Unfortunately, you can’t just ignore a bad review until it goes away. In fact, ignoring an unpleasant review can make things worse! Dealing with negative reviews doesn’t have to be hard, and it can even be leveraged as a marketing and branding opportunity. Remember, you’re not just replying to the one reviewer. You’re speaking to everyone who reads this review, including potential future customers. Replying is your opportunity to turn things around. If a customer brought a complaint to you in person, you would try to make it right. The same goes for online reviews. Replying shows other readers that you are not shady or neglectful to feedback and have taken steps to ensure this problem won’t happen to the next customer. The best thing to do when you receive a bad review is to react quickly and strategically. Here’s how your business should respond to negative reviews and make the most out of a less-than-pleasant situation.
Step 1: Apologize and sympathize in your response to the negative review.
Acknowledge the customer’s concerns. Even if they are unfounded, show sympathy that they had a bad experience. “I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience.”
Step 2: Insert a little marketing in your response to the bad review.
Explain what your customers usually experience. “We’re normally known for our exceptional attention to detail, and we regret that we missed the mark.”
Step 3: Move the conversation offline.
Provide contact info with someone at the business so they can discuss the problem in person. “My name is Paige and I am the Owner. If you’d like to discuss this further, please contact me paige.stuart@planetbeach.com”
Step 4: Keep your response simple, short and sweet.
Don’t go into too much detail or ask any questions. This will prevent saying something that might cause the upset customer to add more negative feedback by replying to the review. Three sentences for your whole reply is a good rule of thumb.
*Don’t include the business name or relevant search keywords.
You don’t want this review showing up in search results!
Now get on your business’s Yelp, Facebook, and Google pages, and let’s get responding!

Apparently tardiness runs in my family so this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who knows me but.. my sister is ALWAYS late! I don’t just mean 5-10 minutes, has a problem with tardiness, late. I mean lose your reservation, miss the plane, show up at halftime of the game- late. As you can imagine, after one too many ruined plans, she isn’t exactly at the top of my list to invite to… well, anything.
I’m sure you can all relate. Everyone has had a friend that continuously let you down. Either they were constantly late, flaked at the last minute or simply never delivered on their promises. What did you end up doing? My guess is that you lowered your expectations until eventually, you stopped relying on them at all.
Let’s use this same example with ourselves. When is the last time you made a promise to yourself only to cancel when that promise became a little difficult to uphold? Have you ever cheated on a diet? Have you ever made a purchase that went outside of the monthly spending budget you set for yourself? Have you ever left your house to head to the gym only to find yourself at happy hour instead? Okay, that last one might just be me, but you get the point. Why is it so easy to let ourselves down yet we feel guilt when we disappoint others?
If we continue to break commitments to ourselves, regardless of how big or small, trust goes out the window. You no longer take those promises you make to yourself seriously. Think about it, when you continue to make goals and not reach them, you create a mental habit of starting something that you know you won’t finish. You’re setting yourself up for failure.
Breaking habits are hard, and starting new ones can be even harder but where there is a will there’s a way. Here are 3 tips to rebuilding trust and holding yourself accountable.
1. Set small, achievable goals: Many of us fail because we set unrealistic goals. I’m all about self-confidence but in order to rebuild trust, we have to start small… think baby steps. Start with attainable tasks that you’re confident you can complete and actually follow through. For example, create a weekly home cleaning list with the goal of executing one chore each day. Scratch off each task as you complete it. Once you get in the habit of fulfilling your small promises to yourself, you’ll begin to see how motivating completing a task is, and learn to set more achievable goals for yourself.
2. Carve out time: Many of us struggle with completing goals, because we don’t plan out how to achieve them or how it will fit into our schedule. The famous excuse here is, “I don’t have time.” Of course not. There isn’t an endless amount of time that we can simply pull from when needed. We have to make time for the things that are important to us. We all share the same 24 hours per day; it’s how we choose to spend it that makes the difference. For example, if you want to complete a juice cleanse, set your alarm to wake up an hour earlier in order to make your daily supply of juice. When you schedule out the time needed to accomplish your tasks, you’ll learn to be more responsible and productive with your time.
3. Remind yourself of the why: If we set a goal for ourselves there is typically an emotional reason behind it. Why is this important to you? If it isn’t, or you can’t come up with a good enough reason, you will most likely quit when the going gets tough. In order to make a change or achieve a goal, you have to be sold on it. It isn’t enough to say you want to save money. What do you want to save money for? If it is simply to have extra money, you will buy the designer handbag as soon as you’re tempted. Unless your goal was to save in order to buy said designer bag then mission accomplished. However, if it is to buy your dream home in a safe neighborhood with a great school district so you can finally take the leap and start a family, you may be more inclined to pass up that shoe sale. Print out a picture of your dream home and keep it visible. Each time you look at it, imagine how happy you and your family will be in your new home. When you remind yourself of your why, you’ll find yourself more motivated and in return, more successful in keeping your promises.
I know it sounds simple, but it’s a lot easier said than done. It can be hard to motivate yourself to fold that pile of laundry or to read that book after a long day of work. After all, if we don’t do it no one will know, right? However, keeping those small promises to ourselves will teach us to be more realistic with our goal setting and to trust ourselves to accomplish them. After a while of keeping small promises, you will begin to challenge yourself more and more until you begin to accomplish the unthinkable.

Several weeks ago, I wrote a blog highlighting Jack Welch who served as chairman and CEO of General Electric during the years of 1981 and 2001 and his position on Differentiation and the 20-70-10 rule. The division and transparency of the top 20, middle 70 and bottom 10 was so clearly defined that it brought various levels of performance into competitive perspective and helped to catapult GE into hyper growth during his tenure.
This week, I would like to highlight Welch’s perspective of what winners are made of and what specific qualities he looked for in his employees. During the hiring process, intelligence, positive energy, edge, passion and the ability to execute were a few of the sought-after qualities that he looked for in his candidates. The ability to work hard, maintain a positive attitude and make tough decisions when faced with obstacles were prerequisites to joining the team. However, of all the qualities that he looked for, the most important was that of integrity. Welch quoted the following as his definition of integrity, “People with integrity tell the truth, and they keep their word. They take responsibility for past actions, admit mistakes, and fix them. They know the laws of their country, industry, and company-both in letter and spirit-and abide by them.”
Companies often adopt a mission statement and a set of core values which defines the spirit and culture of the organization. Planet Beach’s values are People, Belief, Integrity, Focus & Goals. When conducting interviews, I always state the company values and ask which of the values is most important to them and why. Although the values are of equal importance, it’s always interesting to hear their perspective, as this is no wrong answer. The absolute most important value to me is integrity. It’s doing the right thing when no one is watching because you know it’s right. It’s having a foundation of strong moral principles and behaving accordingly. As Jack Welch would say, “Integrity is a ticket to the game. If you don’t have it in your bones, you shouldn’t be allowed on the field.”

The 2020 Planet Beach & HOTWORX Convention will be hosted at the beautiful La Cantera Resort & Spa in San Antonio, Texas July 20-22 2020. The resort is an oasis featuring two world-class golf courses, five sparkling heated pools, luxurious cabañas, a state of the art fitness center and a destination spa. This venue, which offers luxurious accommodations and state-of-the-art meeting facilities, will serve as the perfect setting for the KNOWLEDGE themed conference next summer!
Knowledge defined is the sum of what is known : the body of truth, information, and principles acquired by humankind. Knowledge stimulates self development and is the essence of positive leadership and factual communication. It is the most valuable asset of any business and should be shared openly to help executives sharpen their skills and ensure the company’s longevity and success.
We can all reflect back to our school days and recall the satisfaction of having the correct answers for a test, knowing that you aced it without a doubt. Furthermore, turning in an essay that you put your heart into and writing multiple drafts until you knew it was worthy of an A+. The same level of satisfaction can be achieved in your current profession by having the information in your respective field in order to solve problems, make decisions and work interdepartmentally in an effective manner. There are various ways to improve knowledge such as attending seminars, reading and networking with other people. As the proverbial saying goes, “Knowledge is Power”, and it truly is.
A person having knowledge can control circumstances and perform their role more efficiently. Therefore, take the time to read a book related to your field of work and if you are pressed for time, download it on Audible and let it narrate to you. Additionally, join a networking group with other executives so that you can share your experiences and gain new perspectives by listening to their business practices. Most importantly, apply yourself and make a commitment to learn and gain knowledge. “If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.”

It’s finally here. It’s FALL y’all! Bring out your sweaters, decorative pumpkins, and Halloween movies because it is officially the First Day of Fall! While the Fall season may bring us colorful leaves and pumpkin spice flavored everything, it also brings the opportunity to create great content for your business’ social media. Here are a few ideas you can implement into your social media this season. Keep in mind that you should tailor each idea to your brand.
Spooky Up Your Workspace
It doesn’t matter if your business operates out of a home office or a brick and mortar storefront, Halloween decorations have no bias. Show off your business’ creativity in a fun post highlighting your Halloween spirit in the workplace. Put spiderwebs on your desk, a row of funny pumpkins along the window, and let your creativity run wild. This type of behind the scenes footage is exactly what builds your brand’s personality.
Share Your Pumpkin
Carve a pumpkin, and share it! Make sure it’s post-worthy and on brand. And, it doesn’t always need to be a carved pumpkin. For example, if you own a boutique, you can paint designs on your pumpkins and use it as a mannequin to showcase accessories you sell. Have a hashtag? Why not carve it into a pumpkin and put it outside your door?
Be Thankful
You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to be grateful. The week following Halloween post a video to Facebook where employees and select clients share one quick thing that they are thankful for. End it with the business owner or manager saying they are thankful for the support of their community or thankful to be able to serve your wonderful clients. Edit the video to under a minute, add a cool title, a nice background song, and end it with a slide reading “What Are You Thankful For?” and a “Share with us” hashtag to encourage dialogue. Top it all off with a sweet caption such as “Grateful for you”. You can edit a snippet to post on Instagram and have a call to action to see the full video on Facebook.
Fall Themed Give Away
This one’s simple. Offer something your business can give away in a social media contest. Tell your audience that a winner will be chosen if they like/follow your page, tag a friend below, and repost the picture with the clever hashtag you will create. This gets you more followers and the opportunity to promote one of your products/ services and it will leave your followers happy, because who doesn’t love free stuff?
Which brings me to my last topic! Stop by your local Planet Beach spray & spa to check out all of our October deals. Join anytime in October and get November for free! Just in time to look and feel your very best for your holiday gatherings and save money for all those gifts you’ll be buying! CLICK HERE to find a Planet Beach near you!

Jack Welch served as chairman and CEO of General Electric during the years of 1981 and 2001. During his tenure, the company value of GE increased by 4,000%. Jack was known for his fierce management style and his determination to win. He was also a firm believer in the 20-70-10 rule.
Jack Welch stated, “Differentiation is a way to manage people and business. If you want the best people on your team, you need to face up to differentiation. I don’t know of any people management system that does it better-with more transparency, fairness, and speed. Differentiation, like candor, clarifies business and makes it run better in every way.”
When I read Winning by Jack Welch, I was inspired by his position on differentiation. The division and transparency of the top 20, middle 70 and bottom 10 was so clearly defined that it brought various levels of performance into competitive perspective.
The 20-70-10 were categorized accordingly:
The top 20% are the over-achievers! These are the superstars who are often publicly recognized and decorated for their contributions to the organization and overall success. Secondly, there are the middle 70% who are trying desperately to climb into the top 20%. This middle tiered group is arguably the most critical. They must receive continuous coaching and education to elevate their level of expertise and performance. Finally, there is the bottom 10% who will just simply never make the cut. These low performers must be moved out and replaced with more energized and capable employees. This defined division of performance holds true in School, Sports & Business.
Each year, Welch would fire the bottom 10% of his managers and rewarded those in the top 20% with bonuses and stock options. His management approach worked well for GE, catapulting the company into hyper growth, with a market value increase from $12 billion to $410 billion dollars upon his retirement.
The 20-70-10 rule can be applied to measure employee performance, franchise performance or student academics. Regardless of the origin of application, differentiation in life is a choice. Although some are blessed with a natural talent or skill, a positive attitude and a tenacious drive can supersede all things. What are your dreams and aspirations and how aggressive are you at achieving your goals? Where will you fall in your quest for success? Top 20, middle 70 or bottom 10?
