Congratulations! You’ve (nearly) made it to the end of our Total Wellness principles!

Of course, no tips for total wellness could be complete without our 7th tip: Exercise! It also happens to be National Women’s Fitness Day, so this is the perfect principle to end with!

Exercise is one of those little things that we all know we should do more of, but we often find all types of excuses as to why we can’t or why we don’t have the time to fit exercise into our daily schedule.

Exercise shouldn’t just be something we do when we want to lose a few pounds for an event or bikini season. Exercise needs to be a part of our lifestyle.

Yes, I know it’s hard. That’s why it’s called a workout. You have to put in the work!

But the great thing about exercise is that ANYONE can do it. There are so many different types of workouts that would fit into your lifestyle.

You say you don’t have time? Too much to do? No energy? EXCUSES! Remember: This is for you. Don’t you deserve to achieve total wellness in your life? Find your balance and start making your health and well being a priority.

Go for a walk/run. Buy a DVD. Join a gym. Find a bootcamp. Sign up for a zumba/yoga/barre class.

Whatever it is, just get moving!

Within a few weeks you will notice the difference. You will start to feel and look amazing.

What is detoxing, exactly? And why is it important for total wellness?

The truth is, we are hard on ourselves. Our physical selves, inside and out, as well as our emotional selves, can sometimes get tired or drained. We may eat right and exercise, but we can still have that sluggish, defeated feeling. The reality is, sometimes our bodies just need to reboot, and that’s where the detox comes in.

If you want to free yourself of toxins and rejuvenate your body, then you need a DETOX session!

Truth be told, there are thousands of different types of detoxes out there. I’m serious. Just google it. There are liquid diets and fruit diets and vegetable diets. All of these claim to detoxify your body and get you feeling fresh and vibrant in a matter of days! I have tried a few of these, and really, it comes down to you and what you select as your best fit.

Personally, when doing a detox, I focus on a diet high in natural fibers such as fresh fruits and vegetables– more vegetables than fruits. I make sure to drink water and only water for the duration of my detox in order to flush out my system. This helps with cleansing of the inner organs such as the liver.

Hot water with fresh lemon juice is said to naturally flush out toxins in your body, so I suggest starting and ending each day with a cup of it. Just replace your normal first cup of coffee and your evening tea for a few days and you should be good to go. You may even find this to be a beneficial addition to your daily routine even when you are not in detoxify mode.

Detox is an easy way to boost your system. Just remember, two or three days is a good start, or five if you’re dedicated; just don’t go overboard. Two weeks on a strict liquid-only detox diet could damage your body more than rejuvenate it.

Not to mention, you’d be pretty grumpy and miserable during that time! And no one wants that.

We all know that sleep is important… not to mention one of the greatest things in the universe!

I, like you, LOVE to sleep. We’re always looking to hit the snooze button and get just ten (or 20) more glorious minutes of sweet, satisfying sleep before getting up for work, or school, or whatever it is that causes you to be a called a semi-responsible person. Still, studies have shown that we are getting less and less sleep everyday.

We’re trying to do it all. Be every woman.

We want to go above and beyond at work; we want to give all the time and attention that our children can possibly ask for; we want to nurture our relationships with our significant others, family, friends, coworkers; and we want to look flawless doing it!

You might ask me, “What’s wrong with that?” Well, in a perfect world? Nothing. But, in our world, trying to do it all and be it all usually means shaving off a few minutes of sleep.

The average adult needs between seven (7) and nine (9) hour of sleep to function at our peak healthy levels. Yet, most of us get six (6) or fewer hours of sleep each night.

We have to do better. So, let’s start here and now!

The National Sleep Foundation (Yes, that’s a real thing) has a few tips to help you with your sleep hygiene:

  • Go to bed at the same time each night and rise at the same time each morning.
  • Avoid large meals before bedtime.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime.
  • Avoid nicotine.

Remember, sleep is directly associated to your overall health and well-being. Which means, the less sleep you have each night, the less energy and focus you have to devote to your work, family, friend, and, most importantly your general wellness.

So, get some more sleep. You’re body’s begging you for it!

 

Total Wellness is less about how much food goes into your body, and more about what kind of food goes into your body. You may think that counting calories is the way to go when trying to eat better. But, in truth, we must think more about the food itself than the caloric intake.

Calories mean nothing if your body isn’t getting the proper nutrition that it needs to sustain a healthy, energetic body.

Think about it… Counting calories and adhering to strictly controlled portion sizes may keep overall weight down, but you may still feel tired and sluggish. We begin to depend on those five cups of coffee, diet cokes, and, our favorite around here in the Planet Beach office, extra large sweet teas. While nothing is wrong with these beverages on occasion, we begin to use them as a crutch to get us energized in the morning and keep us going through the day.

But we don’t need this crutch. We can wake up feeling energized and ready to hit our day if we just make sure to eat properly. 

Below are 5 types of food you should eat to start feeling more energized:

  1. Carbs – I know what you’re thinking, but carbs are not the enemy. Eaten in moderation, carbohydrates are our friends. Think about runners who eat pasta before a big race. They are fueling up their body and so should you! Just keep in mind: MODERATION is key. You’re not running a marathon everyday so, don’t eat carbs like you are. Opt for whole grain carbs and you’re golden!
  2. Fruits – This isn’t rocket science. Fruit contains fiber and vitamins, which keep you fuller longer and allows your body to utilize its fuel over time which makes for longer lasting energy levels.
  3. Vegetables – Again, you already know this. Raw is best, but anyway you can get them, vegetables are good for you and, like fruit they keep you fuller and energized for longer periods of time.
  4. Fat – Don’t get it twisted! Fat is a necessary part of the human diet. However, we must make sure that we are getting the right kind of fats in the right amount of moderation. Healthy fats like raw nuts and nut butters are ideal. As are Omega rich foods such as salmon.
  5. Water – Technically, it’s not a food. But, water is an essential part to any diet. Dehydration will make your energy levels plummet faster than you can imagine, so drink up!

Don’t forget to eat at least three meals per day, take a healthy dose of vitamins, and try to maintain a routine of healthy snacks in between meals.

It’s become one of those clichéd health tips. We hear it all the time: Drink lots of water. Moisturize your skin.

There are a lot of words I could use to describe Planet Beach: Rejuvenating. Relaxing. Revolutionary… Romantic? YES!

A young woman in Twin Falls, ID, had booked a couple’s day at a spa for her 2nd Anniversary. The spa overbooked and canceled her appointment leaving the woman scrambling to figure out what to do for her romantic day. At a loss, she called her local Planet Beach and spoke with Shawnee Ridenour of Planet Beach, Twin Falls who assured her that they would take very good care of her.

The next day, the couple arrived to Planet Beach hoping to enjoy some precious time celebrating each other, and they were not disappointed.

A sauna room decorated with rose petals and candles, complete with a sign that said, “Happy Anniversary”, greeted them for their romantic occasion. They enjoyed a nice couple’s sauna and couple’s massages.

At the end of the night, they were so happy and appreciative of everything the staff did for them, they said they would coming back the next week to get Planet Beach memberships. Additionally, she booked three of her girlfriends for consultations on the same day.

BREATHE.

Odds are, you spend very little time thinking about your breathing habits.

I mean, really… it’s not a difficult thing to do. You’re body’s natural need to live, makes sure that you’re acquiring enough oxygen to survive. But, we need to be doing more breathing than is necessary to simply survive.

Poor breathing habits can negatively affect both your mental and physical abilities. Conversely, proper breathing habits can attribute to lower stress levels, reduced tension, and even increase productivity in your fitness routine. If you suspect that you do have poor breathing habits (and most of us do!), the best thing about this is it is quite easily fixed!

A quick, simple breathing exercise is a totally easy way to start feeling a little more rejuvenated, RIGHT NOW! And, done regularly, it trains your body to breathe more deeply even when you’re not doing the exercise. This means more oxygen intake on a daily basis, increased mental and physical abilities, and a more relaxed feeling.

Here is my quick, 5-step breathing exercise:

  1. Sit in a comfortable position with your shoulders relaxed. (Close your eyes for better effect.)
  2. Using your abdominal muscles, inhale deeply through your nose for 5 seconds.
  3. Hold for 2 seconds.
  4. Exhale.
  5. Repeat 5 – 10 times.

You can do this anywhere! At home, at your desk work, or evens sitting at the coffee shop. (This also ties perfectly in to Total Wellness Principle #1.)

Try this breathing exercise for a minute or two, each day. You’ll be on your way to feeling more energized and more relaxed every day!

Or, in other words: Get your mind right!

When it comes to being healthy and happy, your mind is the strongest muscle you have to help you to achieve it. If you can get your mind in a wellness mindset, the rest of you will follow suit.

How many times have you started a nutrition or fitness regime, made a vow to de-clutter your life, or promised yourself that you wouldn’t sweat the small stuff, only to find yourself making excuses and/or talking yourself out of it all together? We are constantly setting ourselves up to fail because we don’t include our mind in plan.

So, what does that mean? Positive thoughts and affirmations are good ways of keeping yourself motivated. Just the act of putting the positivity in your mind can make a huge difference. You may not fully believe what you’re thinking, but you have to train your mind just like any other muscle.

Sometimes it’s as simple as quieting your mind and focusing on what it is that you truly want. And you need to make a habit of this everyday. Meditation and yoga are great ways to clear the mind of negative energy, reduce stress, and focus on yourself, while letting all the distractions of the world fall away. A little “ME” time is good for everyone.

As simple as this all sounds, I know it’s easier said than done. The hardest part for most of us, is finding a quiet time for yourself; and even when you do find that quiet time, you may not know how to turn off the to-do list and life analysis your brain is constantly processing.

And you will be well on your way to achieving total wellness of the mind.

On June 21st, Planet Beach celebrated the grand opening of our newest location in Plantation, FL.

Surrounded by friends, family, and Planet Beach members,  new owner, Christine Benjamin, cut the red ribbon and officially announced the Plantation location of  Planet Beach as open for business.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, everyone was invited inside to tour the new facility, learn more about Christine and the Planet Beach services, and enjoy the provided refreshments.

You could sense the excitement in the air. Old friends reconnected and new friendships were made. The even became less of an opening, and more of a community event while attendees mixed, mingled, and talked about how this Planet Beach location was definitely a benefit to the Plantation community.

After such a huge and successful grand opening, I spoke to Christine, and she could not have been happier with the results:

It was a huge success and everyone had a blast.  Members are still talking about it today.  We were fortunate to capture a few member testimonials about the services and staff, and so far, Planet Beach Plantation has gotten some awesome feedback! 

We’re very proud to become the neighborhood Planet Beach… and as a few members have referred to us, we’re kinda like Cheers, the place you go where everybody knows your name.
