Standard belief is that the spa dates back to the Roman era. Troopers, fatigued by wars, would take to hot natural spring water treatment to cure their wounds, aide sore muscles and promote rejuvenation.
The Roman town’s people, as a means of socializing and relaxing, would use these natural spring water treatments, also known as baths. These baths were usually enlivened by the sound of musical instruments.
These baths were named Sanus per Aquam, which means health by or through water. SPA is an acronym of this term.
Today’s spa is a combination of modern mechanical wonders and ancient traditions. At the heart of the modern spa, you will find water, heat and relaxation, as it was in the beginning.
Now, if you are interested in the “unique” spa treatment you need to check this article out. http://all-that-is-interesting.com/strange-spa-treatments It includes an Israeli snake massage, a beer bath in Prague, Japanese bird poop facial and a flesh eating fish foot massage.
If you are interested in a bit more traditional spa day of your own, please look for a Planet Beach location near you at www.planetbeach.com and check out one of our many different services, including the revolutionary Hot Box Detox.
The experience will leave you wanting more!

Yesterday we honored the one woman that always manages to see us through thick and thin. We may not always see eye to eye with her, but we know that she has our best interest at heart. Yes, we’re talking about dear old MOM!
Through the years I have heard that Mother’s Day was a holiday created by Hallmark and other companies to increase their sales. I decided to do a little digging into history and here is what I found…
Celebrations of Mother’s can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They held festivals to honor the mother Goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. The modern American Mother’s Day started in the years prior to the Civil War (1861-1865) by a lady named Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia. She was responsible for setting up mother’s day work clubs that sought to improve sanitary conditions to help reduce infant mortality. It wasn’t until 1914 that Mother’s Day became an official U.S. holiday.
I also found some FUN FACTS regarding the holiday:
- One quarter of the flowers purchased throughout the year are purchased for Mother’s Day.
- Carnations are the official Mother’s Day flower.
- Pink and red carnations are to be given to all living Mother’s and white carnations are to be given to the departed Mother’s.
- The word Mother, in most languages, begins with “M.”
- 122 million phone calls are made to Mom, on Mother’s Day, in the U.S.A.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Here at Planet Beach we really care about our members and our employees. We love the fact that we can help people look and feel good and when someone receives huge benefits from one of our services we feel the need to share and celebrate.
Below is a story about a Planet Beach Spa Director, Lauren Murphy in Glendale Arizona. Her experience with the Hot Box Detox is AMAZING!!! She is beautiful in both her before and after photo but OMG, what a difference.
Lauren Murphy, we are so proud of you and we want to thank you for sharing your story.
Lauren’s words…”Almost 4 years ago, I herniated a disc in my back. I spent 8 excruciating months barely being able to walk, move, sleep, sit, etc. I had to get 3 steroid shots in my spine and spent 2 months doing physical therapy. Although those did both help tremendously, I knew that I was never going to go one day without being in pain for the rest of my life. Over the next few years, I steadily gained about 40 lbs due to the lack of exercise. I was running about 20 miles a week before my injury. This past January, I decided it was finally time to get back in shape. Not only to feel better about myself, but also to relieve some pressure off my back injury. We got the Hot Box Detox in our store in late January. I began using it 4-5 times a week because it was helping with my flexibility. I could actually touch my toes again. I started eating healthier and cut out all fast foods and sugars. All of a sudden, I was dropping at least 2 lbs a week. As of this past week I have lost 30 lbs and am excited to see how hot box can help others.”
Lauren, you look amazing!

Last week at the Planet Beach Corporate office our beloved HR girl, Shawna Bacon, showed up late…very out of character for her. Her reason gives new meaning to the question “does your motor purr like a kitten”?
Shawna, running on time of course, walked out the front door of her home and began toward her car. Luckily, a waste management worker, making his morning haul, alerted Shawna to a kitten behind her rear tire. She tried to catch the fur ball, only to make it run into the wheel well. To her surprise, she saw another kitten in her other wheel well. Her car had been encompassed by kittens! She eventually managed to get one safely captured with the help of her doting fiance. Thinking they had seen the second kitten run off, they figured it was safe for her to head to work.
Well, Shawna arrived at corporate, she only lives 5 minutes from the office, swearing she heard meowing coming from under her hood. I went to the parking lot with her to check under her hood, and there was no sign of a kitten. She periodically checked throughout the day, still no kitten.
Nine hours later Shawna arrived home, still hearing the meowing. The doting fiance took a flashlight and inspected under the hood one last time. Guess what they found…the kitten, UNHARMED, under the hood of her car. It was a furry miracle!
Both adorable kittens have been adopted!

We all know by now that we need to keep drinking water, it’s good for us right? But sometimes don’t you feel like you want some flavor? I’m not talking about an artificial flavor…I’m talking about delicious goodness for your body and taste buds. Check out these ideas for some FANTASTIC water.
- Honey Lemon– Infuse your water with whole slices of lemon. This will create a more delicate flavor than just squeezing a lemon wedge into your water. Add a teaspoon of honey for sweetness. Very refreshing!
- Orange Fennel– Looking for a sophisticated twist on infused water? Allow fennel fronds to infuse your water, than add slices of orange to brighten the herb up. Not only does this water taste good but fennel is rich in potassium and the orange gives us a boost of vitamin C.
- Pineapple Ginger Mint-Who doesn’t love the taste of pineapple? This deliciously sweet fruit is very high in vitamin C and when added with two time-tested tummy soothers, you can’t go wrong. You can also use a drop of pure essential oil of peppermint in place of the fresh mint.
Stay hydrated my friends!

Stress is a normal part of life, it cannot be avoided, but in the balance of all things it makes the peaceful times even better. The human body is designed to experience and react to stress. It can even be a positive reaction that keeps us alert and ready to avoid danger.
The negative side of stress happens when a person goes without relief or relaxation between challenges and this is where physical and emotional problems may occur. The brain and the body can’t reset hormones and inflammatory chemicals to normal levels making you more likely to get sick. http://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/features/10-fixable-stress-related-health-problems
5 things you can do to help yourself through stressful times
Exercise The post-workout endorphin rush is a great way to cut stress and feel good about your self.
Aromatherapy Certain aromas, such as Lavender, have constantly shown the ability to reduce stress levels. Try putting Essential oil of Lavender into a diffuser, I find it mixes well with citrus oils, or find an Aromatherapy candle that you like.
Laughter Yes, laughter is the best medicine. Surround yourself with friends and family that make you laugh and smile. Your pet can also help out in this area. Those lovable fur balls are very good for us.
Get Creative It can be anything from creative writing to sculpting, just get those creative juices flowing. The meditative effects are great!
Me Day Treat yourself to a day of relaxation. Do the things you like, whether it’s museum hopping or a spa day. You deserve it!

Anyone that owns a dog knows the love that they give…it is unconditional. But did you know that they are good for your health too? Dogs have been used for many years as a means of therapy in hospitals across the world. Now research shows that there are many health benefits to owning your own “man’s best friend.”
Better than medicine Dog owners have been found to have fewer heart attacks, lower blood pressure, and fewer health problems over all. Many scientists believe that this is directly related to the increased activity and laughter that dog owner’s experience.
Boost your mood From my personal experience, I love the feeling when I walk into my house and my 4- legged friends are jumping and spinning with excitement. Why don’t my humans do this for me? On a more scientific note, dogs raise your brain’s levels of dopamine and serotonin, which are neurotransmitters that are associated with pleasure and tranquility.
Help us to be more patient We spend a lot of time training our dogs, sometimes having our patience tested. All the while taking for granted what our furry counter parts teach us. Those adorable creatures teach us patience, commitment and selflessness.
If you’re looking for a best friend that will love you no matter what, check out your local shelter. They have great dogs looking to help you out!

If you own a gym, health club or a spa, how would you like to double your business? Amanda McConkey increased her spa business by 108% in the first full month after she installed a Hot Box Detox infrared sauna this February. Amanda is a great small business owner and she knows how to promote a business. Here’s what she had to say about the new HBX unit at her business:
“Our sales have been increasing everyday, this tells me we made the right decision,” says Amanda McConkey of Destin, FL.
The addition of hot exercise to your list of services at your fitness, training or wellness facility gives you an inventive new service to increase your monthly dues or per session fees.
The cool thing about Hot Box Detox for business owners is that three customers can benefit from the infrared/isometric workout at once and in only 63 square feet…small space, BIG INCOME.
Many owners have installed multiple HBX units side by side. Hundreds of HOT workout sessions can be offered every week with only 2 or 3 units. This is a huge amount of workout capacity in such a small amount of space.
Modern technology has now allowed fitness facilities to go beyond hot yoga and into more ways to offer “hot exercise”. Hot Box Detox is a patent pending infrared sauna designed for a group of 3 people to benefit from 4 hot workouts based on the fusion of isometrics and infrared heat.
Please leave a comment on our Facebook page and let us know your thoughts about Hot Box Detox.

// The business of muscle compression is a huge industry today. We all know that Under Armour brought it to the current level of popularity with their workout compression clothing. What is the big deal? Well…muscle compression works! What does it do exactly, though?
“When compression garments are worn during and after heavy exercise, they appear to reduce muscle soreness,” says Jessica Hill, M.S.c., a U.K.-based exercise scientist who authored a 2013 review on the topic, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
One study “concluded that people who wear compression garments after their exercise sessions experience less soreness and faster muscle recovery than people who rock a more traditional gym outfit, like a t-shirt and shorts.” http://www.menshealth.com/fitness/compression-gear-soreness
Muscle compression combined with isometric postures accelerates blood flow while decreasing the amount of fluid build up resulting in less inflammation and soreness. Of course, this allows you to spend more time with weight training, plyometrics, running or whatever activity is your fitness passion. When you practice isometrics with muscle compression inside of the Hot Box Detox at 120-125 degrees fahrenheit then you will see extreme results from muscle compression.
Use of a Core Compressor around the waist for yoga style isometrics is a great way to restrict the core area for increased blood flow and detoxification. When you twist and compress your internal organs it’s as if you are wringing out your body like squeezing water from a sponge.
The use of compression gear will continue to gain popularity because of the increased level of performance it affords to athletes and fitness enthusiasts. According to InnovationInTextiles.com, “the rising popularity of compression wear has been reflected in strong sales growth, especially since the early 2000s. Moreover, this growth is set to continue for the foreseeable future as demand increases and new product innovations are introduced. – See more at: http://www.innovationintextiles.com/expansion-in-the-compression-wear-market-will-outstrip-growth-in-established-performance-apparel-categories/#sthash.ArYKwnO4.dpuf
Try compression gear with hot exercise! The Hot Box Detox provides the perfect environment for a small group of three people to experience isometrics with infrared heat.
