Breathing… what a simple principle that is so often overlooked. The hectic pace of today’s society causes us to take shallow breaths. I bet just reading that sentence, you took a deep breath because you realized that you WERE taking shallow breaths. Amazing isn’t it? All we need is a little reminder to take deep, mindful breaths every day.
Oxygen is a necessary component for every cell and tissue in our body. It gives us life and destroys harmful bacteria. When you aren’t taking deep enough breaths, you are not inhaling enough oxygen or exhaling enough carbon dioxide which can cause fatigue, mental fog and decreased tissue function. When you breathe deeply, your brain creates longer, slower brain waves – similar to when you are relaxed and calm. So deep conscious breathing can trigger this relaxation response, calming your mind and body.
Try this: Sit with your back straight (Indian style is best). Put one hand on your chest & the other on your stomach. Breathe in through your nose (hand on stomach should rise) and exhale through your mouth (hand on stomach should move). Count slowly as you exhale. The first time breathe in for 1 second and out for 1 second. The second, in for 2 seconds, out for 2 seconds. Continue until you reach 10 seconds. Try to do this at least once a day. You’ll be amazed how much more relaxed you are.

There are 7 basic principles for achieving total wellness: THINK — BREATHE — HYDRATE — EAT — SLEEP — EXERCISE — DETOX. Every week, we’re going to give you some information and tips for each principle through our Facebook, Twitter & Planet Beach Social Network. This week we talked about the first principle: THINK!
Wellness Principle #1: THINK
The first of the seven principles of total wellness deals with our thoughts and mental well-being. No matter how physically strong you are, you cannot attain total wellness without the mind’s power to support you. When you’re mind and your body are in complete synergy, you will live a much healthier, happier and more fulfilling life.
Consider your internal thoughts for a moment. Your thoughts play a vital role in your emotional, physical, and mental development. You must learn to change any thoughts of self- doubt into thoughts of encouragement and motivation. Yes, easier said than done I know but you have to start somewhere. Negative thoughts drain you of energy. When you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, reject it and think a positive one instead. Visualize success. When you say you can’t, say you CAN. If you think something is impossible to achieve, most likely you WON’T achieve it…not because you can’t but because you lack the mind power to push you. You’ll be surprised what you can do if your mind is in the right place.
It’s important to attend to your mental well-being every day. Take a few small breaks each day to relax. Sort through your thoughts and emotions and turn your focus to solutions. If in doubt, LAUGH at yourself. Laughter is great therapy to reduce stress and relax. Did you know they even have Laughter YOGA?! Google it…It’s real.
Another way to be on the path to mental wellness is to try something new and unfamiliar. Find a new hobby, take a photography class, enjoy a musical, or watch the history channel. Challenge your mind.
Setting goals for yourself is something that will help boost your confidence and set you on the path to total wellness. However, it’s not enough to just set a goal and forget about it. You must develop habits in order to achieve it. Some experts say it takes about a month of consistent behavior for something to become a habit. So try it! Might take you a little longer or maybe even less time to form your habit. But stick to it. Don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
Bottom line to mental wellness: Believe in yourself… believe in the seemingly impossible and you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.

The 2nd Annual National Sunless Day last week was a huge success! In Spokane, Washington, one Planet Beach location celebrated their 4 year anniversary the same day! In honor of these two special occasions, we sent our Planet Beach GLOW Cover Model, Sierra to check out the event.

The spa was full of life. Members and customers enjoyed quality food and drinks…even WINE! (for those of age of course) while Sierra answered customer questions concerning the pbGlow sunless line. The staff kept everyone entertained, letting customers test products and make appointments to try out services.
We even received a fantastic testimonial from a customer who could barely walk the first time she came to Planet Beach. Now she’s strong & healthy! She attributes much of her health to using Red Light Therapy, Messages and Hydration treatments. This happy customer said she’s never felt better and even stopped needing her pain medication!
