October is breast cancer awareness month and there are so many fundraisers that you can take part in to help this cause. The Susan G. Komen foundation is one of the largest and most successful organizations in this fight.

The foundation was started in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker following the death of her sister, Susan G. Komen, at the age of 36. It took Brinker years to actually break the silence surrounding the disease. She dealt with combative newspapers unwilling to print the words “breast cancer,” but she persevered knowing there were lives that needed to be saved… sisters, mothers and friends all fighting for survival across the globe. Brinker’s unwavering advocacy for the disease lead to new legislation and greater government research funding.

Many of us have personal stories of loved ones battling breast as well as other cancers. To see the patient suffering is heart-breaking, to say the least, but the effect that it has on the loved one’s around the patient is another story. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 70’s at the age of 35, I was only 5 years old. I can remember, like it was yesterday, over hearing my father on a phone call late one night after he returned from the hospital. I have no idea whom he was speaking with, but he was crying and saying that they weren’t really expecting my mother to survive and how was he going to raise 3 children without her. The pain in his voice still brings tears to my eyes.

My mother’s doctor’s went above and beyond for her. She was in the advanced stages of the disease. She had her breast and surrounding tissue removed. They were actually giving her some type of chemo that she would drink, it was an experimental effort at the time. Miraculously she survived. Now, we all know how aggravating a mother can be at times, I can say that because I am one, but whenever she aggravates me I quickly remind myself how fortunate I am to still have a mother. She is now 74 and doing just fine.

So many children are not as fortunate as I was, please find it in your heart to donate for the cure.

As we start to feel the cool Fall air move in, we also start to see the foliage change color and yes, PUMPKINS everywhere.

A little history on the large squash…
Pumpkins are considered to be a squash, which is a fruit and grows on a vine. The word pumpkin originated with the Greek word Pepon, which means large melon. It eventually was morphed by the English, French and then into the American word “pumpkin.” It is believed to have started in the Ancient Americas. The early Native Americans used pumpkins as a food source during the cold winter months and a fun fact…The Native Americans used the “Three Sisters” tradition of growing their pumpkins. “The Three Sisters” is believed to be a growing technique that incorporates growing squash, corn and beans together. The corn was used as a natural trellis for the beans to grow and the bean roots provided nitrogen to the soil, a necessity to nourish the corn. The squash were used as a shelter for the shallow roots of the corn and also provided shade to preserve moisture and discourage weeds from growing. That is soooo cool!!!

Aside from Pumpkin pie, I found a few other uses for the “much loved” squash.

Exfoliate the Skin
Pumpkins are rich in zinc, vitamins A, C and E. So, it’s not just good to eat, it is also good to apply to your body. Using a mix of pumpkin puree, brown sugar and a splash of milk makes a great natural exfoliant for the skin. Just combine the ingredients into a paste, apply to the skin in a circular motion and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing.

Feed the Wildlife
Instead of throwing your carved jack-o-lanterns out, you can place in your yard for deer to eat. Also, birds love pumpkin seeds if you don’t want to toast them up for yourself.

Cocktail Hour
Fill a shaker with ice, 1 tablespoon of pumpkin puree, 2 ounces of vanilla vodka, a splash of lime juice and honey, shake and serve over fresh ice. You can garnish with a honey/brown sugar rim and a cinnamon stick.

Happy Fall!

September is National Self-Improvement Month and Planet Beach is offering many ways to improve your health and beauty. We all know that improving your health and getting on a workout regime can make you look and feel better.  Also, giving yourself the gift of spa to relax, glow, and renew can increase your self-esteem, because when you look good and feel good you are more confident in everything you do.

There is also the “internal” self-improvement issues that we can’t ignore. Just remember that being kind and generous is not only beneficial to other’s but it is also beneficial to you. One could say, “ kindness makes you happy and happiness makes you kind.”

Kindness may have a longer, even more profound effect on our happiness, according to a study, published online in the Journal of Happiness Studies, conducted by researchers at Harvard Business School and the University of British Columbia.  Also keep in mind that kindness is contagious. When people see acts of kindness, it prompts them to want to be kind themselves.

There are those individuals that seem to just be more compassionate by nature. Then there are those that need to make a conscious decision to do something for the good of man. If you are one of those, try to incorporate a few minutes a day where you ask someone “what can I do for you?” After doing this for a while it becomes a habit and part of your lifestyle. I learned this from Ratinjit Sondhe, an inspirational speaker, author, and friend of Planet Beach.

Just keep in mind that we are all in this together. We all inhabit this planet and need to be aware of others as well as ourselves.  There is good in everyone and that’s what we need to focus on and embrace.

Beautiful Skin

Beautiful skin is a girl’s best accessory. When you are proud of the skin you have, it can allow you to be so much more confident in everything you do.

There are many things that contribute to the condition of our skin. Our environment, our diet, sleep habits, exercise and product use are among the most direct influences on its condition. So we know for those sun lovers they need to moisturize, that’s a given. Smoking is a definite no-no, and not just for your skin. There are certain foods that can help to enhance your skins appearance. Below are 5 easy to find foods that can help you get your glow on.

  1. Chocolate– SOME OF THE BEST NEWS I HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME!!! Cocoa hydrates your skin, making it more supple and firm. You must stick to, at least, 70% cacao, which contains a potent antioxidant. Of course it is recommended to eat only 2 squares a day.
  2. Yellow, Orange and Red Peppers-The antioxidants in these veggies can help decrease the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Also women who eat these vegetables regularly tend to have fewer wrinkles.
  3. Greek Yogurt- Eating the protein found in dairy helps the skin become firmer leaving it more resistant to fine lines. Greek yogurt contains nearly double the amount of protein found in regular yogurt.
  4. Pomegranates- This fruit is packed with polyphenol antioxidants, which are beneficial for fighting free radicals and regulating the skins blood flow. This will give your skin a slight rosiness.
  5. Walnuts- These nuts are filled with omega-3 fatty acids that can improve your skins elasticity. They are also rich in copper, a mineral known to boost collagen production.

Please always remember to drink plenty of water and get 8 hours of zzz’s a night. If you are looking for a moisturizer, Planet Beach has a variety of great options for the face and body. Check our products out on www.planetbeachshop.com.

I have had many people ask me “how can you live in an area that is so prone to natural disasters?” I always have the same response…”I love the people.” The Louisiana culture is like no other. The food is great the music is unique and the people are warm, colorful and tough as nails. When there are people in need, Louisiana communities pull together and help each other out. We view our neighbors and co-workers as our extended family and love them with all of our hearts. I have lived in the New Orleans area my entire life and I couldn’t be more proud of my city and state.

Louisiana’s latest devastation in the Baton Rouge area, touched everyone on our corporate team. We pulled together and used one of our offices as a drop off for donations. The outcome is heart warming to say the least.

There are so many stories of local heroes pulling people and animals from their flooded homes that I personally want to say THANK YOU. There is one story of a local hero that I would like to share….a Planet Beach team member’s fiance, decided to buy a boat and drive up to the Baton Rouge area where he spent 4 days on a rescue mission. In that time he pulled a dozen people from the flood waters. Thank you Ernie!

We also want to ask that you keep the Normand family in your thoughts and prayers. They are part of the Planet Beach team in the Baton Rouge area and have been devastated by the recent events.

There are still people and animals of all ages that are left without necessities. Please find it in your heart to donate. Below is a link that includes different organizations.

As the 11 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaches, South Louisiana will once again embark on the long road to recovery following the widespread flooding that affected Tangipahoa, St. Helena, East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parishes.  Although the extent of the disaster will not be known for some time, authorities have confirmed that thousands of homes have been devastated in Louisiana.  Planet Beach Franchising will be collecting items such as blankets, pillows, clothing, toiletries and non perishable food items for the victims affected by the unprecedented flooding.  The donations may be brought or sent to the PBFC Corporate Headquarters located at: 5145 Taravella Rd. Marrero, La 70072.

Planet Beach understands the wrath of Mother Nature all too well.  Only one week following Hurricane Katrina, the company had resumed operations at a satellite office in Houma, Louisiana.  In preparation of the Hurricane, the primary network server was transported to a location that would withstand an F-5 Category Tornado.  This critical move freed the lines of communication and allowed employees of Planet Beach to stay in constant contact as they fled their homes and found refuge in various destinations throughout the United States.  Senior Executives of Planet Beach implemented an operating plan that allowed the company to continue supporting and servicing its’ franchise locations across the globe.  These proactive measures allowed the company to persevere and progress forward.

Though Hurricane Katrina brought with it fierce winds and rains that washed away entire communities, it could not shake the perpetual spirit of Planet Beach.  In one catastrophic week, the company was pushed to the edge and pulled itself back. The people of the organization experienced the emotions of fear and loss, but amazingly demonstrated teamwork and focus.  They continued to focus on the job at hand under the most trying circumstances.  Through the tragic loss and devastation, the valiant people of the company persevered and carried on.  They moved forward and looked ahead without looking back.  They held on to the hope of tomorrow, to start anew and to seize the opportunity that lay before them.  They embraced the opportunity to rebuild their homes, their communities and their lives.

As state officials and personnel begin the restoration process in South Louisiana, Planet Beach Franchising will be assisting those affected by this unforeseen circumstance.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the flood victims.  Again, donations may be brought or sent to 5145 Taravella Rd. Marrero, La 70072.  Hours of Operation are MondayFriday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Did you know that the largest organ on the human body is the skin?  In our youth, we take the integrity of our skin for granted. As a kid I remember my neighborhood pack. We would spend our summer days outside… swimming, biking, playing tennis, playing football in the rain, then washing with harsh soaps to clean the days grit. Never did any of us touch a bottle of lotion.

Forward, many years later, I still do spend a lot of time outdoors but have a very hard time staying moisturized. Some lotions are too greasy, some are too fragrant and some just don’t work.  I was recently introduced to Infuse. Not only does Infuse hydrate and nourish but it also detoxifies the skin. This ultimate lotion also provides the body with important anti-oxidant and anti-aging benefits.

For those men and ladies that are conscious of their skin tone, Infuse also may increase melanin production which is the pigment responsible for tanning. If you are a UV enthusiast, Infuse will also help activate UV therapy lotions and enhance the results.

Infuse is a no brainer!
