For the past few months we have been completely focused on bringing you tips for overall total wellness. These are principles that we hope that you will integrate into your overall daily lives, as they are important to follow all year round.

However, for the next few months we will be focusing on Relaxation.

The rest of the year will be an entertaining, exciting, though, stressful time. It always is. All of the wonder and splendor of the fall and winter seasons, complete with more holidays than any other time of year can take a toll on your sanity.

The changing of the seasons means less long, sunny days to brighten your mood. The hustle and bustle of the holidays can put stress on you with all of the shopping and parties and travel, all the while still trying to stay focused and on top of your work schedule.

This is why we at Planet Beach feel it’s important for all of us to remind ourselves to take a little time to relax whenever we can.  We will be sharing tips and ideas on the best ways for you to stay feeling relaxed through even the most stressful time of year.

April 15th is right around the corner and lets face it, Tax Day can cause a lot  of stress for people.  Getting your finances in line can put your body under a lot of stress and cause a lot of tension. (all of those boxes!).

No need to fear, it is time to lay down, literally, and relax!  It is all going to be over on Monday!  Once again, Planet Beach is pairing up with HydroMassage for Tax Week!

Deep breathing. When we are experiencing stress we often take many shallow breaths, causing further physical stress to the body. Breathing deeply and slowly promotes relaxation of the body and mind.

Organization. Keep all of your financial documents in one place, so that when you do your taxes you will not have to sort through other files or a stack of mail.

Don’t let long hours be your excuse to eat poorly – sugary snacks can leave you feeling drained of energy. A balanced diet with healthy snacks  will help keep you energized. (poor diet can contribute to stress!)

Take frequent, timed breaks. Set your smart phone alarm to help you keep conversations to a minimum so you can stay on track (for fun, check out the Planet Beach mobile app).

Laugh…read a favorite comic, keep a joke book handy, or (if permitted) watch a short clip from a favorite comedy. Laughter helps put things in perspective.

We all love sleep. Sleep makes you feel revitalized, but its significance goes far beyond just lifting your mood and banishing under-eye circles. Sleep is a key component of total wellness that benefits your heart, mind, weight and more!

Sleep is an active state affecting both your physical & mental well-being. When you sleep, your body rests and restores energy. A good night’s sleep is often the best way to help cope with stress, solve problems, or recover from illness.

So how much sleep do you need? The amount of sleep each person needs varies depending mostly on age and level of physical activity. Infants need 16 hours of sleep a day, while teenagers typically require 9 hours. For most adults, 7 to 8 hours is sufficient although as few as 5 or as many as 10 may be required.  As a general rule of thumb, if you feel drowsy during the day or if you routinely fall asleep within 5 minutes of lying down, you probably haven’t had enough sleep!

You’re life is full of daily responsibilities. Whether its work, taking care of the kids and spouse, running errands, working out, they ALL wear you down. Despite the fact that you’re completely exhausted at the end of the day you STILL can’t get enough sleep. Here are some helpful tips to get a better night’s sleep!

First of all, you need to let go and relax after a long day. You deserve it!  Take a warm bath, read a book or do another relaxing activity before bed. You can train your brain to associate certain restful activities with sleep. Make them part of your bedtime routine to make it easier to get to sleep so you can wake up refreshed and completely revitalized to take on the day!

Set a sleeping schedule and don’t veer from it. Go to bed at a set time each night and wake up at the same time each morning. “Sleeping in” on the weekends resets your sleep cycle for a late awakening, making it harder to wake up early on Monday morning.

If all else fails, and you STILL can’t get to sleep, don’t just lie in bed awake. The anxiety of not being able to fall asleep just makes things worse. Watch TV, read a book or listen to music until you feel tired.

The amount of sleep you get contributes to your overall wellness in a variety of ways so make sure you get enough of it to keep you strong and healthy!
