1. Do I have to be naked during a spray tan?
No, you don’t have to be naked when you spray tan. While some people prefer to be nude to avoid tan lines, you have the option to wear whatever is most comfortable for you—like a swimsuit or underwear. During your tan, bronzer could transfer to your clothing but don’t worry! All cosmetic bronzers used in Norvell products are water-soluble, meaning it’ll come out of clothing in the wash.
2. Can I wear makeup during a spray tan?
We don’t recommend wearing makeup during your spray tan. Cosmetics can act as a barrier on the skin and result in an uneven tan. But don’t fret—Norvell products are non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores and are okay to apply onto the face.
3. How do I stand during a spray tan?
Your spray tan artist will tell you how to position your body to make sure you receive an even natural-looking tan. Just follow their guidance to end up with a beautiful tan.
4. When can I get dressed after a spray tan?
After your spray tan, you can get dressed as soon as you feel dry, which is normally within a couple minutes after the session. Your spray tan artist can speed up the dry time by removing the spray gun from the air hose and “blow drying” your skin. Another tip: We don’t suggest wearing tight clothing because your tan can rub off. Wearing dark, loose-fitting clothes is the way to go!
5. How long after a spray tan can I shower?
This one is important! You shouldn’t shower for at least 24 hours after getting a spray tan. You should also avoid sweating or swimming during this time. Most Norvell products contain a bronzer to give you an immediate tan. The bronzer is cosmetic and will wash off in the shower revealing a natural-looking tan that will last about a week.
6. Will my tan come off in the pool?
Avoid the pool completely for the first 24 hours after your spray tan. After that, you’ll still want to splish-splash sparingly, as chlorine can cause your tan to fade faster than normal. Just a reminder: Spray doesn’t protect your skin from the sun! It’s important to still apply SPF before any fun in the sun.
7. Can I use self-tanner between spray tans?
Yes, maintain that glow between spray tans! Norvell has many self-tan options to maintain your tan at home. Instant self-tanning products immediately allow color to appear deeper. 8. Will my spray tan have an odor?

Ahhh, sunless tanning! Odds are, how you define it won’t be the same as the next person. Since we’ve done over 50+ million tans, we can give you the real meaning of sunless tanning and clear up the differences between spray tanning and self-tanning.
Sunless Tanning 101
Sunless tanning consists of spray tanning and self-tanning. Both are easy. It’s just a matter of which you prefer.
With spray tanning, a light mist is sprayed onto your body in a private, automated booth or with a technician’s hand-held sprayer. Spray tanning solutions range from clear to different bronzer tones. They can even include skincare benefits!
Self-tanning involves applying tanning products in the comfort of your own home. The range of self-tanning products includes sprays, lotions and mousse.
Spray Tanning: Booths vs. Handheld
The private, automated booth has nozzles that spray your entire body (front and back) with a tanning solution. Typically, you’ll strip down and jump in the booth in a tanning or beauty salon. But don’t worry, no one is watching. Booths provide voice-guided instructions on what to do and how to stand to achieve the best tan. With options, you can tan in a clear solution or with a bronzer.
With the handheld airbrush, the technician sprays the tanning solution on you. The technician will apply the tanning solution on your entire body and guide you on how to stand and where to place your arms, etc. You can strip down (which most people do) or leave your undergarments on – whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. The technician is also trained to be sensitive to your preferences. If you leave your undergarments on, make sure they are old and dark colored. For this tan, you can head over to a tanning or beauty salon, but you can also schedule an appointment for a technician to come to your house.
Spray Tanning vs. Self-Tanning
The biggest difference between spray tanning and self-tanning is that spray tanning relies on equipment and self-tanning involves products you can apply on your own at home.
You can use sprays that would emulate the light mist you’d get in a booth or with the handheld unit. Sunless tanning lotions can be compared to your typical lotions and moisturizers. Both sprays and lotions give a full-body, even tan. Lotion is great option for tanners who want more control over the depth of their tan. With lotion, you can easily apply less or more. It does take longer to apply the lotion vs. the spray. Spray is ideal for people who want a quick, easy and even full-body tan. However, there will be over-spray, so we recommend applying in the bathroom, or shower, where surfaces can easily be washed down. It’s best to apply sprays and lotions with an applicator mitt. If you don’t have this readily available, be sure to wash your hands immediately after applying.
Overall, sunless tanning makes you look good, and more importantly, feel good. Whether you spray tan or self-tan, you can get the perfect glow in a matter of minutes. It really comes down to what you have time for based on your lifestyle. Enjoy that sunless tan, no matter what way you get it.

How does spray tanning work? We have your answer. It depends on whether you jump in an automated booth or prefer to be sprayed by a technician with a hand-held unit.
Spray tanning or self-tanning products have Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), an ingredient that interacts with your skin to give you the perfect tan that you desire. Spray Tanning Prep
If you want a streak-free and even tan, take necessary steps to get that perfect look:
• If you’re going to shave, do so at least 12 hours before you tan
• If you wax, do that before you tan as well
• Exfoliate and rub-off excess, dead skin cells for an even tan
• Avoid lotion right before you tan because lotions can act as barriers and cause an uneven result.
• Remove makeup
• Shave, wax and exfoliate well before spray tanning.
Spray Tanning Post Care
Once you’re done, you need to give the tan time to develop for spray tanning to work well. Rule #1 – avoid getting wet for 4-6 hours, whether working out or showering. Don’t even think about jumping into a pool or going out in a monsoon. Timing is the key to ensure that the tan isn’t streaky or uneven as it develops.
Once you’ve given your tan enough time to set in, rinse in warm water. Do not scrub or use super-hot water. After your shower, don’t forget to moisturize. It’s important to keep your skin hydrated to make your tan last longer and fade evenly.

We all want to achieve that healthy glow. The problem most of us have is knowing exactly how and where to start. Whether you prefer UV-Therapy, Sunless Spray Tans, or a cocktail of both, Planet Beach has got you covered! In this 3-part series I will walk you through the best practices of all 3 options!
Spray tanning can be intimidating if you’ve never done it, so I’ll try and break it all down for you here. Planet Beach spray & spas offer many different options for sunless color. Whether you prefer the privacy of the booth or customization of an air brush, we offer it all! If you have a special event or vacation coming up, I would absolutely opt for a spray tan and say goodbye to having to slowly build color in the traditional UV bed. Booths like Mystic, VersaSpa, and PB Glow are the quickest and easiest way to get your glow on. Similar to self-tanning lotions, the solution applied in spray-tan booths contains Dihydroxyacetone or DHA, a chemical that causes a reaction with the top layers of your skin, causing it to darken for up to a week. The tan will develop within a few hours, fade as your skin naturally exfoliates, and will not wash away like a temporary bronzer would.
Here’s how it works. Wearing your birthday suit or a swimsuit, you’ll stand in the booth. Automated nozzles spray a fine mist of self-tanner solution on your body and a prerecorded voice instructs you when to change positions to allow the spray to reach all sides of your body. The nozzles pass over your body with air at the end to dry you. The entire process takes 5 minutes or less! You can’t beat it!
For those who want a more customized option there’s also airbrush tanning. With airbrush tanning, a certified airbrush technician applies a customized shade of tanning solution to your body with an airbrush gun. This option leaves far less room for error as you aren’t left to your devices when positioning yourself or choosing a color level. An airbrush artist will customize a level of tan that is appropriate for your skin tone.
If you’re getting an artificial glow for an event, especially your wedding, always do a trial run a few weeks before the big day and schedule your tan two days before the event.
When deciding whether a spray-tanning booth or an airbrush tan is right for you, there are a few considerations, but an automatic spray-tan booth and a custom spray tan really cannot be compared. I truly believe that when people are afraid to get a spray tan in general, it’s because they think of Ross in the spray-tan episode on Friends! Don’t let your nerves get to you. At Planet Beach our educated Spa Consultants can walk you through the details of both and help you choose which is best for you taking into consideration things like your reason for spraying, your skin-tone, etc.
Here are the dos and don’ts you need to know to ensure a quality spray tan.
DO
- Exfoliate prior to your spray tan just like we discussed with a UV tan in the first blog of the Glow Series.
- Shave prior to your spray tan. This is essentially another form of exfoliation as it takes the top layer of your skin with it.
- Apply a body butter to areas that are prone to grab more solution like knees, backs of ankles, elbows and definitely your hands and feet. I say body butter rather than lotion because it creates more of a barrier.
- Use a booster or primer before a spray tan! Ask your Spa Consultant which products are made for the particular spray you’re doing. Remember if your skin is dry, your tan will flake off with it.
- Moisturize in the days following. This will retain your tan and keep it looking fresh longer.
- Pat yourself dry; don’t rub after showering.
DON’T
- Exercise, bathe or swim sooner than 8 hours after your spray tan. It will result in streaks.
- Mistake a sunless tan for sunscreen. There is no UV protection in sunless tanning solution.
- Wear light-colored clothing or your prettiest lingerie. The self-tanning solution can stain your clothing, so choose loose, dark clothing instead.
- Wear any jewelry or hair ties on your wrist. I’ve made this mistake. You’ll have a white line just as you would with regular tanning.
- Apply deodorant if possible before your spray tan. Because deodorant is an aluminum-based product, you may notice that your armpits have a green hue after tanning. This happens when the aluminum in the deodorant reacts with the sunless solution. It’s best to arrive with clean, fresh skin so that there are no barriers for the application.
- Hang out in a chlorinated pool or hot tub. You’ll exfoliate that tan right away!

The other day I was working out and Britney Spears’ “You Better Work” filtered through the radio and it put me in the zone. Her words reign so true. Hard work in all aspects of life yields positive results and if you want to accomplish great things, you need to put in the time and effort. The key to working hard is to do the right things consistently and understand fully what you want to accomplish. So how do you incorporate consistent positive habits into your life and how long does it take to truly form a habit?
According to the book published in the 1960s by plastic surgeon, Maxwell Maltz, he surmised that it took plastic surgery patients 21 days to get adjusted to their altered appearances, which ultimately gave way to the 21-day habit forming analogy. Later, it was revealed that it could take more like 66 days to solidify a new habit in a study conducted by Dr. Phillippa Lally and her collaborators in 2009. In her study, 96 volunteers chose an eating, drinking or activity behavior to perform daily in the same context over a 12-week period. Some chose an easy task such as drinking a glass of water before bed, where others chose a more challenging activity such as running for 15 minutes before dinner. Through this study, it took participants on average 66 days to solidify their new habit.
So how do you form a habit and make it stick? Author James Clear shares four simple steps to building better habits in his book, Atomic Habits. The process is divided into four steps: cue, craving, response and reward.
“The cue triggers your brain to initiate a behavior. It is a bit of information that predicts a reward such as a trip, money, recognition, love or friendship.
Cravings are the second step, and they are the motivational force behind every habit. Without some level of motivation or desire – without craving a change – we have no reason to act. What you crave is not the habit itself but the change in state it delivers. You are not motivated by brushing your teeth but rather by the feeling of a clean mouth.
The third step is the response. The response is the actual habit you perform, which can take the form of a thought or an action. Whether a response occurs depends on how motivated you are and how much friction is associated with the behavior. If an action requires more physical or mental effort than you are willing to expend, then you won’t do it. Your response also depends on your ability. It sounds simple, but a habit can occur only if you are capable.
Finally, the response delivers a reward. Rewards are the end goal of every habit. The cue is about noticing the reward. The craving is about wanting the reward. The response is about obtaining the reward.”
