Lately we have been on a history kick. As Planet Beach continues through it’s Skincare Campaign we find it really inspirational to think about how far we have come with beauty and skincare treatments. It is also really interesting to find out things that appear very common to us have actually been used in the same exact ways for thousands of years. Read below for some great ancient Greek and Egyptian skincare treatments still used today!
There are actually many things we still use today that the ancient Greeks and Egyptians used for skincare treatments, but there are definitely a few that stand out the most. I’m sure you are aware that there are thousands of new skincare products, botox, light therapy, and even chemical peels out there, but the idea of these things have all started from the ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations.
Salt
Both the Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Greeks understood the importance of exfoliation and used salt to rejuvenate their skin. They used natural products to achieve a youthful look. We have followed in the footsteps of our ancestors and still use abrasives to get rid of dead skin cells, including many of Planet Beach’s exfoliators!
Clay
Ancient civilizations regularly used clay to heal diseased or damaged skin as they discovered it had many healing properties. Staying clean was incredibly important to the Egyptians who would often mix clay, ash and oil together to form soap. This mixture was often scented and would help them smell nice despite the heat of the sun which caused them to sweat. The ancients used clay to smoothe fine lines and draw out any impurities just like Planet Beach’s Oil Control Clay Mask!
Olive oil
Olive oil has been considered sacred for many years and was used to anoint the kings and athletes of Greece. It was often referred to as “liquid gold” and was used by the Ancient Greeks as a moisturizer and a natural sunscreen. There are many olive based skincare products today! Olive oil is perfect for people allergic to harsh chemicals and is often used to revitalize and soften the hair and skin.
Frankincense
Egyptian women used to use frankincense to calm stretch marks caused by pregnancy. While frankincense might seem like an unusual product to use on your skin its healing properties are still recognized today. This natural remedy is used in many modern products and is thought to be able to clear up sores.
Almond oil
Almond oil was found in many Egyptian products and was used throughout the classes. Both pharaohs and their workers used to rub this natural ingredient into their skin to keep them looking young. The vitamin E found in almonds worked to rid draw out harmful toxins and rid the body of free radicals. Almond oil is still found in many new cosmetics!
Looking good and feeling great is not a new development! We have always found ways to feel great about ourselves and always will! It is very hard to pin point exactly where the word “spa” comes from, but the two main theories are that the word “spa” is an acronym for the Latin phrase, “salus per aquae,” or “health through water.” Some argue that the origin of the word “spa” comes from the Belgian town of Spa, known since Roman times for its baths. The Belgian town, Spa, was so prominent as a place to be restored and pampered that the english meaning of “Spa” is argued to originate there.
For thousands of years, us humans, have always found reasons to relax, renew, and glow! The practice of bathing in hot springs and mineral waters dates at least to the Babylonians and Greeks, and maybe even dating further back.

Modern spas have their roots in ancient towns famed for the healing powers of their mineral waters and hot springs. Travelers would come to “take the waters” and restore their health.
The United States became a center of spa innovation beginning in the 1850s, when New York’s Saratoga Springs emerged as a fashionable retreat for the rich and famous ranging from Edgar Allan Poe to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The first day spa, Manhattan’s Red Door Salon, was introduced by Elizabeth Arden in 1910, offering manicures, facials and the signature “Arden Wax.” A second-generation American, Deborah Szekely, created the first destination spa, Rancho La Puerta, located just south of the border in Baja California. In 1958, Szekely also opened the pioneering Golden Door spa in California, offering individualized weight loss and fitness programs.
With more and more people turning to spas for total skincare, wellness, and stress relief goals the demands for an affordable, monthly membership, self automated spa are unrivaled by Planet Beach, the world’s largest automated spa franchise!
