Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday commemorating the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 defeat over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage in the United States, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

Most Americans partake in the celebration by dining at the best Mexican Restaurants, swaying to the Mariachi Bands and possibly getting wasted away again in Margaritaville. Interestingly, the California Avocado Commission estimates that Americans will consume up to 81 million avocados on this day by indulging in one of the ever famous Mexican staples, Guacamole.
