This week Planet Beach will celebrate our very own holiday, National Sunless Day. We are all very excited to share this holiday with you, and tell you all about our “Day of Spray” this Thursday, June 22nd!
What is it?
National Sunless Day is a celebration of all things sunless! In the past, the only option available for Planet Beach members to achieve the bronze skin they desired was to lay in a traditional UV bed multiple times a week. What started out only offering UV tanning eventually lead to the variety of automated spa services we see in a Planet Beach spray & spa today. Planet Beach CEO and founder, Stephen P. Smith, recognized the beginning of the decline in demand for tanning and acknowledged the heightened role automated technology played our everyday lives. It’s quite an accomplishment to say that we pioneered the “automated spa” concept! Who would have thought 20 years ago that we would have equipment to make achieving your beauty, wellness, and fitness goals convenient and affordable?
Automated Everything
Automated technology has such a huge impact on today’s society that it almost goes unnoticed! Bills are paid automatically, checks are deposited automatically, cars are started automatically, airplanes are flown with automation, and TV recordings are scheduled automatically. I remember when a TV Guide Magazine was delivered with the newspaper once a week. Physically flipping through a magazine to decide what to watch on TV that night made satellite TV with push-button access to an entire week’s program schedule basically unfathomable! Automated technology now allows cars can to parallel park themselves. Need I say more about the progress we’ve made?
The point I’m trying to make is that automated technology is such a significant part of our history and will continue to have a significant impact on our future. With the history of Planet Beach and the transition from strictly tanning to the automated spa services now offered, you can easily recognize the role it played in getting us where we are today as an organization. Do you think the members that tanned at Planet Beach in 1996 could have imagined walking out the door with beautifully bronzed skin immediately following a 5-minute spray tan? What about the beauty and wellness goals you can achieve with automated massage, facial, spray tan, and teeth whitening sessions? It makes you wonder what the world will be like in 5, 10, 15 years!

OUR STORY
Health club and gym owner Stephen Smith was looking for a way to diversify his business and decided to add a tanning salon to his portfolio. In 1995, he found a location that was built out to be a tanning salon but never opened in uptown New Orleans. He signed a lease for this location and named it Electric Beach with a plan to franchise eventually. This was a natural tie-in with his gym business. He had been in the health club industry for many years and understood the value of helping people to look and feel good.
In 1996, Smith decided to franchise his tanning business. A name change was in order. However, since funds were tight, he recognized the opportunity to keep some of the existing signage. He could only change one of the words on the sign outside. “Beach” stayed, and he replaced “Electric” with “Planet” to represent the desire to escape to the beach and have an “otherworldly” and relaxing experience.
On April 1, 1996, the Planet Beach franchise program was born. The first Planet Beach franchise — and the locations that followed — led to great success and many innovations in the spa industry. Today, there are over 200 franchise units globally. The company is still based in New Orleans and the original Uptown location is still open and thriving after 20 years.
In 2005, Smith had a self-described moment of inspiration:

“I saw that we could provide the same results of a traditional spa in less time and a whole lot less money,” Smith says. “Our industry was changing, demand for UV tanning was diminishing, and demand for day spa services and spray tanning was increasing. It became very clear to me that we needed to reposition our brand to increase success of the franchise and to better serve our customers. We created a new business model with the Planet Beach automated spa concept.”
