On April 1st, 2021 Planet Beach Franchising Corporation celebrated a big day, and I’m not talking about April Fool’s!
When Stephen Smith opened the first Planet Beach on May 15, 1995, he truly wanted to revolutionize the tanning industry. His goal: to help people achieve that sense of rested well-being that only comes from a day at the beach. So, he took his experience in gym management and opened his “Electric Beach” in the Uptown district of New Orleans. The concept took off, but the name needed some tweaking. After much thought, it was officially changed to Planet Beach on April 1, 1996, beginning to franchise and expand the concept across the globe with the quest to change the way the world rejuvenates!
But truly the most revolutionizing change came in 2005, when Smith repositioned the company and expanded services, launching our automated spa concept. Such forward-thinking helped the system overcome its most tricky challenge to date, the negative press about tanning.
Smith saw the shift as an opportunity. Recognizing that some customers do benefit from moderate UV therapy, Planet Beach also anticipated huge consumer demand for other health and wellness services and expanded into a one-stop spa with an impressive roster of options.
Since the beginning, the goal of Planet Beach has been to instill a sense of mental and physical renewal for all of the guests who walk through the door. And, all changes at Planet Beach spas have always kept that goal!

We totally understand how preparing for a spray tan can seem overwhelming. You’ve probably heard DOs and DON’Ts from friends, family, and especially the internet. Prep and maintenance of your sunless tan is super important and so easy, which is why Norvell put together the ultimate guide to a beautiful tan.
Here’s how easy it is to get ready for a spray tan the Norvell way:
Step 1: Exfoliate—but be gentle!
Use a gentle exfoliator before your spray tan to buff away any dead skin. This will help to buff away any dry, dead skin and help you achieve an even tan. We suggest using the Norvell Renewing Sunless Exfoliator—it’s gentle, sulfate-free, and polishes the skin to perfection before your tan.
Step 2: Plan Ahead if Waxing or Shaving
If you need to wax or shave, it should be done at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment. Doing so before ensures no streaks & an even natural tan!
Step 3: No Lotions
Heavy moisturizers could stand in the way between your skin and your soon-to-be bronze. Lotions could be a barrier that prevents spray tanning solution from absorbing into the skin evenly. The morning of your spray tan, just skip your lotion routine. When it’s time for your appointment, prep the skin as explained in Step 4.
Step 4: Find Your Balance

A question many people ask is “Is spray tanning safe?” When you tan with Norvell, the answer is yes! Norvell spray tans are formulated with the best ingredients to give you the best tan.
Norvell starts by using Eco-Certified Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. It’s the active ingredient found in most sunless tanning products, and it’s naturally derived from plants like beets or sugarcane.
