Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The month of October is breast cancer awareness month, an annual campaign which increases awareness of the disease. According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, 1 in 8 women have a risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime. There are many factors that increase that risk, however it was found that older women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than younger women. The highest risk category was women age 70 with a 1 in 25 (4.1%) chance of development.  Other risk factors include genetics, lifestyle and the environment.

There are proactive measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer, such as recognizing the warning signs or symptoms and undergoing regular screening tests with follow up tests and treatment if diagnosed.  Whether you are female or male, I’m sure you have been either directly or indirectly affected by breast cancer. At Susan G. Komen, they consider a person a survivor from the moment a breast cancer diagnosis is confirmed. Co-survivors may include family members, spouses or partners, friends and colleagues.  Those that are there to provide direct support from the diagnosis through treatment often experience emotional distress and must modify their lives to ensure their loved one is cared for.

I call these individuals walking angels on earth!  Anyone can stand by your side during the good times, but it’s the ones that make their appearances during the darkest of days that are special. You know who they are! They are the ones that will selflessly devote their time to provide emotional support, prepare a meal for your family or even offer transportation if needed. These are the co-survivors!

At Planet Beach, we will pay special tribute to all breast cancer survivors and co-survivors with a complimentary service during the month of October.  In addition to staying educated and taking proactive measures to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, it’s important to care for yourself with regular relaxation and exercise.  Planet Beach offers services that will help you maintain your overall health and wellness. You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.  Let Planet Beach stand strong with you during Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
